Polyhedral vesicles: a Brownian dynamics simulation.

Abstract

Polyhedral vesicles with a large bending modulus of the membrane, such as a gel phase lipid membrane, were studied using a Brownian dynamics simulation. The vesicles exhibited various polyhedral morphologies such as tetrahedron and cube shapes. We clarified two types of line defects on the edges of the polyhedrons: cracks of both monolayers at the spontaneous curvature of the monolayer C0<0, and a crack of the inner monolayer at C0> or =0. The inner monolayer curved positively around the latter defect. Our results suggest that the polyhedral morphology is controlled by C0.

Nematic liquid crystals at rough and fluctuating interfaces.

Nematic liquid crystals at rough and fluctuating interfaces are analyzed within the Frank elastic theory and the Landau-de Gennes theory. We study specifically interfaces that locally favor planar anchoring. In the first part we reconsider the phenomenon of Berreman anchoring on fixed rough surfaces, and derive new simple expressions for the corresponding azimuthal anchoring energy. Surprisingly, we find that for strongly aligning surfaces, it depends only on the geometrical surface anisotropy and the bulk elastic constants, and not on the precise values of the chemical surface parameters. In the second part, we calculate the capillary waves at nematic-isotropic interfaces. If one neglects elastic interactions, the capillary wave spectrum is characterized by an anisotropic interfacial tension. With elastic interactions, the interfacial tension, i.e., the coefficient of the leading q(2) term of the capillary wave spectrum, becomes isotropic. However, the elastic interactions introduce a strongly anisotropic cubic q(3) term. The amplitudes of capillary waves are largest in the direction perpendicular to the director. These results are in agreement with previous molecular dynamics simulations.

Errors in the determination of the point of origin of bloodstains.

Bloodstain pattern analysts are sometimes called upon to determine the point of origin of a pattern of bloodstains. A derivation of expressions for the uncertainties deltaX and deltaY in the coordinates of the point of origin P(X, Y) of two bloodstains on a surface has recently been published. These uncertainties were expressed in terms of the uncertainties in the measured distance between the bloodstains and the uncertainties in the angles of impact of the bloodstains. This paper extends the derivations in the previous work by expressing the uncertainties in the coordinates of the point of origin of two bloodstains in terms of the uncertainties in the length and width measurements from which the angles of impact of the bloodstains are calculated.

Conformation study of the membrane models by the Maxwell displacement current technique and oxidative stress.

The role of biological membranes as a target in biological radiation damage is still unclear. Recently much attention has been paid to the dynamic behaviour of the cell membrane. Maxwell displacement current technique (MDC) provides new possibility of conformation study of the membrane models. Oxidative stress can impair macromolecules in the cell on a molecular level. MDC technique enables to study the changes in molecular orientations and/or conformations of cell membranes. The combination of different methods in structural biology can clarify membrane chemical and physical properties.
