[Adhesive attachments for removable partial dentures].

Abstract

Since twenty years adhesive dentistry plays a certain role in the design of removable partial dentures. With the use of adhesive attachments the esthetics and retention of a removable partial denture can be improved. To apply these attachments successfully the contour of a sound abutment has to be corrected by grinding to provide retention and resistance. The procedures for constructing removable partial dentures with adhesive attachments are described. It is recommended to apply adhesive attachments in the general dental practice.

Biotechnology in the wood industry.

Wood is a natural, biodegradable and renewable raw material, used in construction and as a feedstock in the paper and wood product industries and in fuel production. Traditionally, biotechnology found little attention in the wood product industries, apart from in paper manufacture. Now, due to growing environmental concern and increasing scientific knowledge, legal restrictions to conventional processes have altered the situation. Biotechnological approaches in the area of wood protection aim at enhancing the treatability of wood with preservatives and replacing chemicals with biological control agents. The substitution of conventional chemical glues in the manufacturing of board materials is achieved through the application of fungal cultures and isolated fungal enzymes. Moreover, biotechnology plays an important role in the waste remediation of preservative-treated waste wood.

Palaeontology: spider-web silk from the Early Cretaceous.

The use of viscid silk in aerial webs as a means to capture prey was a key innovation of araneoid spiders and has contributed largely to their ecological success. Here I describe a single silk thread from a spider's web that bears glue droplets and has been preserved in Lebanese amber from the Early Cretaceous period for about 130 million years. This specimen not only demonstrates the antiquity of viscid silk and of the spider superfamily Araneoidea, but is also some 90 million years older than the oldest viscid spider thread previously reported in Baltic amber from the Eocene epoch.
