Myelin growth and initial dynamics.

Abstract

During the dissolution of solid surfactants in water, various types of nonequilibrium microstructures have been observed. The most important one is the myelin growth which can be observed when some poorly water soluble surfactants such as phosphatidylcholine (PC), Aerosol-OT (AOT), etc. are contacted with water. In this study initial myelin growth for a period of 2-4 s is studied both qualitatively as well as quantitatively in all the directions with respect to water flow in a PC system using digital video microscopy. Further, overall myelin growth is studied by means of optical microscopy to understand the effect of distance between cover slip and glass slide on myelin growth. Experiments are also performed to study effect of additives (silica) to lamellar phase on diffusion coefficients. It has been observed that the presence of silica particles causes extensive coiling of myelin structures. The mechanism of water transport into the lamellar phase during myelin growth is investigated by using silica in a colloidal range as dopant material.

Dissipative particle dynamics simulation of phase behavior of aerosol OT/water system.

The phase behaviors of the binary mixture of an anionic surfactant aerosol OT (AOT) and water are investigated on a mesoscopic level using dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) computer simulations. With a simple surfactant model, various aggregation structures of AOT in water including the lamellar, viscous isotropic, and reverse hexagonal phases are obtained, which agree well with the experimental phase diagram. Special attention is given on the unusual lamellar regions. Water diffusivity shows much useful information to understand how the phase behaviors varied with concentration and temperature. It is proposed that the anomalous lamellar phenomena at intermediate AOT concentration (about 40%) are due to the formation of a defective structure, pseudoreversed hexagonal phase, which evidently decreases the water diffusivity. After increasing temperature above 328 K, the pseudoreversed hexagonal structure will be partly transformed to a normal lamellar phase structure and the system lamellar ordering is therefore enhanced.

When is water not water? Exploring water confined in large reverse micelles using a highly charged inorganic molecular probe.

The interior water pool of aerosol OT (AOT) reverse micelles tends toward bulk water properties as the micelle size increases. Thus, deviations from bulk water behavior in large reverse micelles are less expected than in small reverse micelles. Probing the interior water pool of AOT reverse micelles with a highly charged decavanadate (V(10)) oligomer using (51)V NMR spectroscopy shows distinct changes in solute environment. For example, when an acidic stock solution of protonated V(10) is placed in a reverse micelle, the (51)V chemical shifts show that the V(10) is deprotonated consistent with a decreased proton concentration in the intramicellar water pool. Results indicate that a proton gradient exists inside the reverse micelles, leaving the interior neutral while the interfacial region is acidic.

Sensing behaviors of polypyrrole nanotubes prepared in reverse microemulsions: effects of transducer size and transduction mechanism.

Polypyrrole (PPy) nanotubes with different diameters were readily fabricated using cylindrical micelle templates in sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse microemulsions. Interestingly, Raman spectroscopy and ultraviolet (UV)-visible spectroscopy revealed that the PPy nanotubes with smaller diameters had a more extended conjugation length as well as a higher oxidation level. The PPy nanotubes were deposited onto a microelectrode array and were exposed to chemical vapor and electromagnetic radiation: typically, NH(3) vapor and UV light were chosen. The electrical response of PPy nanotubes to two different kinds of analytes was strongly dependent on their diameters. Moreover, since the small dimensions of PPy nanotubes facilitated the interaction between nanotubes and analytes, the PPy nanotube sensors showed conspicuously enhanced responses compared with conventional PPy.
