The excimer laser: program implementation and nursing implications.
Abstract
The excimer laser is a low energy level laser used in the correction of myopia and removal of corneal scars. The technique, known as photoablation, produces a new kind of laser-tissue exchange where the corneal tissue is transferred into a gaseous state that is expelled from the surface. Predetermined layers of corneal tissue are removed without injury to surrounding tissue. Reshaping the cornea's central optic zone is visually equivalent to placing a contact lens on the eye.
