[Rice allelopathy to barnyardgrass].

Abstract

138 rice (Oryza sativa) germplasms were identified to study the allelopathy to barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crusgalli), using the relay seeding technique. The results showed that Qingkun 2 from Jiangxi Province, Xiayitiao from Jiangsu Province, Jizaoxian from Anhui Province, Ganzaoxian 37 from Jiangxi Province, Shangnuo 1, IR68465-2-3-2 from IRRI, and Shuiyuan 2 from Korea had a strongly excellent inhibition effect on barnyardgrass. Results from pot culture showed that Gumei 2 and Zhong 156 had a greater inhibitory effect than control, and allelopathic material TN1 had no significantly inhibition effect, compared to non-allelopathic material Xiushui 63. The effect of Zhong 156 was related to its plant height, and significant different from that of Xiushui 63. Gumei 2 had a stronger inhibition effect on barnyardgrass, due to its own allelopathic trait.

Identification of phytotoxic substances from early growth of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli) root exudates.

Barnyard grass is a problematic weed worldwide. It competes with crops and causes reduction in crop yields. In this study, barnyard grass suppressed rice emergence, and the degree of rice inhibition was proportional to the density of barnyard grass. Root exudates of barnyard grass reduced germination and growth of lettuce, rice, and monochoria. Fifteen compounds potentially involved in the phytotoxic activities of barnyard grass were isolated and identified, including phenolics, long-chain fatty acids, lactones, diethyl phthalate, acenaphthene, and derivatives of phthalic acids, benzoic acid, and decane. Quantities of diethyl phthalate, decanoic acid, myristic acid, stearic acid, 7,8-dihydro-5,6-dehydrokavain, and 7,8-dihydrokavain were 2.7, 11.1, 19.6, 35.5, 10.3, and 15.5 microg/ml of barnyard grass root exudates, respectively. The two lactones exhibited the greatest inhibition, followed by the phenolics and the derivatives of phthalic acids. Fatty acids had stronger suppression than diethyl phthalate and ethyl ester-4-ethoxy-benzoic acid. The acenaphthene and decane derivatives were the least phytotoxic. The phytotoxins released by barnyard grass roots showed strong inhibition on growth of broadleaf indicator plants and paddy weeds, but were less effective on barnyard grass itself and rice. Our study revealed that in addition to competition, barnyard grass also interferes with rice and other plants in its surroundings by chemical means.

[Allelopathy and resources competition of rice under different nitrogen supplies].

In order to explore the bio-interference of allelopathic rice with barnyardgrass under different nitrogen supplies, a new bioassay method, i.e., allelopathy-competition separation based (ACS) approach was recommended in this study. The results indicated that ACS could be successfully used to distinguish the rice allelopathy from its resources competition in rice-weed co-culture system, and to evaluate its response characteristics under different N supplies. The test rice accession PI312777 had a higher ability in interfering target weed barnyardgrass (BYD), represented by its stable and higher ability in resources competition, as well as its increasing allelopathic potential in suppressing companion weed BYD when the N supply decreased in the co-cultured system. The reverse was true in the case of rice accession Lemont, which had a lower allelopathic potential under all N supply levels, and a lower ability in resources competition under normal or rich N supply. But, Lemont had an obviously increased ability in resources competition under lower N supply, which was considered as the result of econiche competition in rice-weed system.

[Prevention efficiency of Exserohilum monoceras with chemical herbicides against Echinochloa crus-galli in paddy field].

This paper studied the impact of several herbicides on the conidium germination of Exserohilum monoceras strain X27 in petri dish, and the synergistic effects of the pathogen and chemical herbicide quinclorac or propanil against Echinochloa crus-galli in greenhouse. The prevention efficiency of the tank-mixture of pathogen and quinclorac was also evaluated in paddy field. The results showed that test herbicides except quinclorac and bensulfulfuronmethyl could inhibit conidium germination and hypha growth to different degree. A significant synergism was observed between the pathogen and quinclorac. Adding quinclorac could obviously increase the prevention efficiency against Echinochloa crus-galli. Under field condition, the single use of pathogen could only control about 60% of the weed, while the efficiency of pathogen-quinclorac mixture could reach 90%.
