Abstract

Biologic attachment of load-bearing orthopedic implants has developed as a response to long-term problems associated with polymethylmethacrylate cement fixation. Although early clinical results of uncemented hip and knee implants have been encouraging, histologic studies of retrieved implants have shown a distinct lack of bone apposition and ingrowth. Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings applied to metallic implant substrates have been shown to enhance biologic fixation. These results have led to the clinical investigation of the use of HA-coated total hip replacements.

One step synthesis of silver nanorods by autoreduction of aqueous silver ions with hydroxyapatite: An inorganic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposite.

In this report, a novel method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles on the surface of hydroxyapatite is described. Hydroxyapatite crystals are synthesized from acid mineralized solution, a byproduct of bone glue industries, by a simple chemical precipitation method, which results in the formation of hydroxyapatite nanocrystals. The reduction of silver ions occurs by the electron transfer from the hydroxyl groups on the surface of hydroxyapatite. This results in the formation of silver nanorods and needle shaped nanoparticles that are bound on the surface of hydroxyapatite, and the observed silver nanocrystals show anisotropic structure. Thus, hydroxyapatite crystals can be used as a new class of inorganic scaffolds for the synthesis of nanomaterials with implications in designing inorganic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposites for different applications.

Bioactivity in in situ hydroxyapatite-polycaprolactone composites.

In our previous work, hydroxyapatite (HAP) was synthesized under two conditions: one in the presence of polyacrylic acid (in situ HAP) and the other in the absence of polyacrylic acid (ex situ HAP). Composites of both HAPs with polycaprolactone (PCL) were investigated for their applicability as scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. In the current work, bioactivity of these composites has been investigated by soaking them in simulated body fluid for different intervals of time. Nucleation and growth mechanism of apatite on these composites has also been investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study suggests that although apatite growth starts with an intermediate phase, it completely transforms to HAP after 4 days of soaking. Nanoindentation results suggest that the apatite growing on in situ HAP/PCL composites has much higher hardness and elastic modulus as compared to the apatite growing on ex situ HAP/PCL composites. The apatite grown on the ex situ composites has a net-like interconnected structure. The observed differences in mechanical properties and morphology of apatite have been described on the basis of nucleation mechanisms. The nucleation of apatite on the in situ HAP/PCL composites proceeds through the formation of a complex between Ca2+ and COO- groups; on the other hand, nucleation occurs because of dissolution reaction of apatite in ex situ HAP/PCL composites.

Instant nano-hydroxyapatite: a continuous and rapid hydrothermal synthesis.

Nano-particle hydroxyapatite (HA) rods, were rapidly synthesised using a three pump continuous hydrothermal process (using a water feed at up to 400 degrees C and at 24 MPa): the product was obtained as a highly crystalline and phase pure material, without the need for an ageing step or subsequent heat treatment.
