High-aspect-ratio bulk micromachining of titanium.

Recent process developments have permitted the highly anisotropic bulk micromachining of titanium microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). By using the metal anisotropic reactive ion etching with oxidation (MARIO) process, arbitrarily high-aspect-ratio structures with straight sidewalls and micrometre-scale features have been bulk micromachined into titanium substrates of various thicknesses, ranging from 0.5-mm sheet down to 10-microm free-standing titanium foils. Bulk micromachined structures are generally free of residual stresses and are preferred when large, rigid, flat and/or high-force actuators are desired. However, so far there has been a limited ability to select materials on the basis of specific application in bulk micromachining, primarily because of the predominance of MEMS processes dedicated to single-crystal silicon, such as silicon deep reactive ion etching. The MARIO process permits the creation of bulk titanium MEMS, which offers potential for the use of a set of material properties beyond those provided by traditional semiconductor-based MEMS. Consequently, the MARIO process enables the fabrication of novel devices that capitalize on these assets to yield enhanced functionalities that would not be possible with traditional micromechanical material systems.

Online SAXS investigations of polymeric hollow fibre membranes.

Polymeric membranes are used in industrial and analytical separation techniques. In this study small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) with synchrotron radiation has been applied for in-situ characterisation during formation of polymeric membranes. The spinning of a polyetherimide (PEI) hollow fibre membrane was chosen for investigation of dynamic aggregation processes during membrane formation, because it allows the measurement of the dynamic equilibrium at different distances from the spinning nozzle. With this system it is possible to resolve structural changes in the nm-size range which occur during membrane formation on the time-scale of milliseconds. Integral structural parameters, like radius of gyration and pair-distance distribution, were determined. Depending on the chosen spinning parameters, e.g. the flow ratio between polymer solution and coagulant water, significant changes in the scattering curves have been observed. The data are correlated with the distance from the spinning nozzle in order to get information about the kinetics of membrane formation which has fundamental influence on structure and properties of the membrane.

Volatile organic components migrating from plastic pipes (HDPE, PEX and PVC) into drinking water.

High-density polyethylene pipes (HDPE), crossbonded polyethylene pipes (PEX) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes for drinking water were tested with respect to migration of volatile organic components (VOC) to water. The odour of water in contact with plastic pipes was assessed according to the quantitative threshold odour number (TON) concept. A major migrating component from HDPE pipes was 2,4-di-tert-butyl-phenol (2,4-DTBP) which is a known degradation product from antioxidants such as Irgafos 168(R). In addition, a range of esters, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons and terpenoids were identified as migration products from HDPE pipes. Water in contact with HDPE pipes was assessed with respect to TON, and values > or =4 were determined for five out of seven brands of HDPE pipes. The total amount of VOC released to water during three successive test periods were fairly constant for the HDPE pipes. Corresponding migration tests carried out for PEX pipes showed that VOC migrated in significant amounts into the test water, and TON >/=5 of the test water were observed in all tests. Several of the migrated VOC were not identified. Oxygenates predominated the identified VOC in the test water from PEX pipes. Migration tests of PVC pipes revealed few volatile migrants in the test samples and no significant odour of the test water.
