Mass-analyzed threshold ionization spectroscopy of pyridine. Structural distortion in the first excited state.

For the first time, vibrational spectra of the pyridine cation in the electronic ground state have been measured via several intermediate states (0(0), 16b0(2), 16b0(4), 6a0(1), 6b(1), 16a0(1), 10a0(1) and 12(1)) by Mass-Analyzed Threshold Ionization (MATI) spectroscopy. From the MATI spectra, the adiabatic ionization energy of pyridine has been determined to be 74,185 +/- 6 cm(-1) (9.1978 +/- 0.0008 eV). Several vibronic modes in the ionic ground state could be assigned for the first time. An intensity gain of vibrations having b1 symmetry could be observed by activating the ion ground state. Also, a breakdown of the "delta nu = 0 propensity rule" for the excitation via the 16b(2) and 16b(4) states of the first excited states are displayed in the recorded spectra. In conjunction with ab initio calculations these observations can be explained by a strong geometrical distortion along the 16b vibration in the first excited state, leading to a "boat distortion".

FTIR, FT-Raman spectra and ab initio DFT vibrational analysis of 2-amino-5-chloropyridine.

The FTIR and FT-Raman spectra of 2-amino-5-chloropyridine (ACP) has been recorded in the region 4000-400 and 3500-100 cm-1, respectively. The optimized geometry, frequency and intensity of the vibrational bands of ACP were obtained by the ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) levels of theory with complete relaxation in the potential energy surface using 6-31G(d,p) and 6-311+G(2df,2p) basis sets. The harmonic vibrational frequencies were calculated and the scaled values have been compared with experimental FTIR and FT-Raman spectra. The observed and the calculated frequencies are found to be in good agreement. The experimental spectra also coincide satisfactorily with those of theoretically constructed bar type spectrograms.

Total synthesis of piericidin A1 and B1.

The first total syntheses of piericidin A1 and B1 are disclosed and unambiguously establish the relative and absolute stereochemistry of the natural products by an approach that will facilitate the synthesis of a series of analogues. Central to the approach is an inverse electron demand Diels-Alder reaction of a N-sulfonyl-1-aza-1,3-butadiene with tetramethoxyethene followed by Lewis acid-promoted aromatization used to assemble the functionalized pyridine core. Additional key elements in the convergent approach include the use of an anti-aldol reaction to install the C9 and C10 relative and absolute stereochemistry, a modified Julia olefination for formation of the C5-C6 trans double bond with convergent assemblage of the side chain, and a penultimate heterobenzylic Stille cross-coupling reaction of the pyridyl core with the fully elaborated side chain.
