New entries in Lewis acid-Lewis base bifunctional asymmetric catalyst: catalytic enantioselective Reissert reaction of pyridine derivatives.

The first catalytic enantioselective Reissert reaction of pyridine derivatives that affords products with excellent regio- and enantioselectivity is described. The key for success is the development of new Lewis acid-Lewis base bifunctional asymmetric catalysts containing an aluminum as a Lewis acid and sulfoxides or phosphine sulfides as a Lewis base. These reactions are useful for the synthesis of a variety of chiral piperidine subunits, and catalytic enantioselective formal synthesis of CP-293,019, a selective D4 receptor antagonist, was achieved. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that both sulfoxides and phosphine sulfides can activate TMSCN as a Lewis base. In addition, the sulfoxides with appropriate stereochemistry might stabilize a highly enantioselective bimetallic complex (a presumed active catalyst) through internal coordination to aluminum.

A seven-membered aluminum sulfur allenyl heterocycle arising from the conversion of an aluminacyclopropene with CS2.

The reaction of an aluminacyclopropene LAl[eta2-C2(SiMe3)2] (1, L = HC(CMeNAr)2, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) with CS2 in the temperature range from -78 degrees C to room temperature affords the first seven-membered aluminum sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound [LAl]2(mu-S)[eta2-SC(SiMe3)=C=C(SiMe3)] (2) bearing an allenyl group. The structural characterization of 2 and the analogous compound LAl[OC(O)C2(SiMe3)2] (3) of the proposed intermediate A and the variable-temperature 1H NMR kinetic study of this reaction may give a better understanding on this unusual conversion.

First principles resonance widths for Li near an Al(001) surface: predictions of scattered ion neutralization probabilities.

By combining a first-principles periodic density functional theory calculation of adsorbate resonance widths with a many-body dynamical theory of charge transfer, we assess charge-transfer rates for ions scattering off metal surfaces. This goes beyond previous approaches, which have been limited to modeling the surfaces with either static potentials or finite clusters. Here we consider Li(+) scattering from an Al(001) surface. We show how the Li 2s orbital hybridizes with metal valence bands, near the surface, increasing the width of the 2s energy level. This in turn affects the charge-transfer rates between the ion and the metal surface. Our predictions for Li(+)-Al(001) scattering yield the correct angular dependence of the fraction of neutral Li atoms formed when compared to experiment.
