AFTER THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR was over, women once again faced prejudice that kept them out of the nursing profession, but they were not willing to accept this fate. NURSING PIONEERS, such as Linda Richards and Lillian Wald, persisted in their quest for training and oversaw the establishment of a number of training programs for nurses in the United States. THESE WOMEN, recognizing the importance of organization to their fledgling profession, then turned their attention to continuity in training programs and licensure.
A school of nursing and a health system in Massachusetts developed a unique partnership to create a system to attract and retain new nurses in acute care. The structure of this partnership was designed to increase the faculty of the school of nursing and add to the educational expertise in the department of staff development in the health system's major acute care hospital. The process was developed using an empowerment model. The authors describe the structure, process, and outcomes of this partnership.
