Facile light-triggered one-step synthesis of small and stable platinum nanoparticles in an aqueous medium from a beta-cyclodextrin host-guest inclusion complex.

It is shown, for the first time, that small (ca. 2 nm) and stable platinum nanoparticles can be easily obtained in one step through visible light irradiation of a host-guest inclusion complex between beta-cyclodextrin and platinum acetylacetonate in a water solution. The exclusive control of the reaction by an external trigger, the removal of the undesired reaction products without any manipulation of the sample, and the absence of ionic repulsions between the metal nanoparticles represent the main remarkable advantages offered by this synthetic methodology.

Micellization phenomena of biodegradable amphiphilic triblock copolymers consisting of poly(beta-hydroxyalkanoic acid) and poly(ethylene oxide).

This paper reports the studies on micelle formation of new biodegradable amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate]-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PHB-PEO) triblock copolymer with various PHB and PEO block lengths in aqueous solution. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the micelles took an approximately spherical shape with the surrounding diffuse outer shell formed by hydrophilic PEO blocks. The size distribution of the micelles formed by one triblock copolymer was demonstrated by dynamic light scattering technique. The critical micellization phenomena of the copolymers were extensively studied using the pyrene fluorescence dye absorption technique, and the (0,0) band changes of pyrene excitation spectra were used as a probe for the studies. For the copolymers studied in this report, the critical micelle concentrations ranged from 1.3 x 10(-5) to 1.1 x 10(-3) g/mL. For the same PEO block length of 5000, the critical micelle concentrations decreased with an increase in PHB block length, and the change was more significant in the short PHB range. It was found that the micelle formation of the biodegradable amphiphilic triblock copolymers consisting of poly(beta-hydroxyalkanoic acid) and PEO was relatively temperature-insensitive, which is quite different from their counterparts consisting of poly(alpha-hydroxyalkanoic acid) and PEO.

Density functional theory study of the fourier transform infrared and Raman spectra of dichloro-bis(2,4-pentanedionate)tin(IV).

Fourier transform infrared and Fourier transform Raman spectra of dichloro-bis(2,4-pentanedionate)tin(IV) have been obtained. Density functional theory (DFT) BLYP calculations, have been carried out with the purpose of understanding the metal-ligand region spectra of this compound. Vibrational wavenumbers calculated by BLYP/6-31G* force fields are closed with the experimental results. The percentage of deviation of the bond lengths and bond angles gives a good picture of the normal modes, and serves as a basis for the assignment of the wavenumbers. The calculated geometrical parameters show slight differences compared with the experimental ones, and these differences can be explained by the different physical state of Sn(acac)2Cl2. The DFT-BLYP calculations assumed a free molecule in the gas phase. The experimental wavenumbers are obtained from the spectra of solid samples.
