[reaction: see text] Diastereoselective synthesis of racemic 3,4-dimethoxy-7-morphinanone from racemic 2-(2,3-dimethoxyphenyl)cyclohexen-1-ol has been achieved. The relative structure has been determined by transformation of the product into the known 3, 4-dimethoxy-6-morphinanone. Resolution of the starting cyclohexenol has also been accomplished for use in a future enantiocontrolled synthesis of morphine.
