Spent potlining utilisation possibilities.

Abstract

As the world's capacity for aluminium production increases, the amount of waste connected with this industry is also increasing. Spent potlining (SPL) from aluminium reduction cell cathodes presents a major environmental concern in the primary aluminium industry. It is concluded, after laboratory tests, that leachable cyanide and fluoride compounds present the major problem in SPL disposal. The behaviour of cyanide and fluoride under high temperature treatment has been investigated. On the basis of this laboratory investigation, the possibilities for SPL utilisation in red brick manufacturing, cement industry and thermal power stations were evaluated. SPL refractory material is already re-used in red brick manufacturing. In the cement industry, a pilot test on the utilisation of 25 t SPL carbon waste mixed with green petrol coke gave positive results. Additionally a fluoride emission forecast for a thermal power station utilising carbon waste SPL mixed with coal was elaborated.

Endoscopic Nd:YAG laser therapy of infantile subglottic hemangioma.

Of the many therapeutic modalities that have been developed for infantile subglottic hemangioma (ISH), the most common technique is endoscopic excision with carbon dioxide laser, used alone or combined with other therapeutic techniques. A staged procedure has been proposed as the preferred choice for patients with severe airway obstruction. Nevertheless, ever since the neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser was developed, this modality has been considered feasible to treat vascular tumor in the airway due to good hemostasis power. We present two cases of ISH with severe airway obstruction that underwent endoscopic surgery using an one-stage Nd:YAG laser approach. Details of the laser characteristics and surgery techniques are described in this article.

Application of phenylboronic acid modified hydrogel affinity chips for high-throughput mass spectrometric analysis of glycated proteins.

The complexity of the human plasma proteome is greatly increased by post-translational modifications. Besides physiological modifications, pathological conditions such as diabetes are responsible for adding to this complexity by producing advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs). When searching for specific biomarkers it is a prerequisite to reduce this complexity prior to analysis. To do this, agarose hydrogel was used to create a high-capacity affinity layer on the modified aluminum surface of MALDI (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization) targets. 3-Aminophenylboronic acid was immobilized via cyanogen bromide activation as a ligand for affinity sorption of glycated proteins, followed by their direct detection by MALDI. High protein capacity of prepared MALDI chips, efficient separation and low non-specific protein binding were demonstrated. The results show that phenylboronic acid modified hydrogels are very suitable for creating affinity surfaces for the high-throughput analysis of AGEs.
