Stable chloroform emissions in southeastern China: insights from recent observations.

Chloroform (CHCl3) is a short-lived ozone-depleting substance not currently regulated under the Montreal Protocol. Due to the unique meteorological conditions in East Asia, CHCl3 emitted in this region has a greater potential to reach the stratosphere and contribute to ozone depletion. As an essential component of national CHCl3 emissions, southeastern China has attracted increasing attention. However, long-term observational data in this region remain relatively scarce, with no updates since 2020. In this study, we continuously measured atmospheric CHCl3 concentrations at a remote monitoring station in southeastern China from 1 June 2023 to 31 May 2025. Frequent concentration enhancements were observed during the monitoring period, with mixing ratios ranging from 9.3 to 134.1 ppt and an average value of 36.8 ± 19.7 ppt. Back-trajectory analysis indicated that air masses associated with elevated CHCl3 levels primarily originated from coastal industrial provinces in eastern China. Using the Potential Source Contribution Function and Concentration Weighted Trajectory methods, we identified the Yangtze River Delta (Jiangsu, Anhui, and Zhejiang Provinces) and Jiangxi Province as dominant source regions. Emissions of CHCl3 in southeastern China were estimated using the Tracer Ratio Method to be approximately 30.1 ± 5.3 Gg/yr from 2023-06-01 to 2025-05-31, indicating overall stability relative to earlier estimates and no apparent upward trend. These findings provide updated insights into the current status of CHCl3 emissions in southeastern China and highlight the need for continued monitoring and emission assessment of CHCl3 in East Asia, given its unregulated status and implications for ozone layer recovery.

Identification and responsibility of 2,4,6-tribromoanisole in musty, corked odors in wine.

In this work, gas phase chromatography analysis coupled with selective selected ion monitoring (SIM) identified 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA) in wines found on tasting to have significant "musty or corked" character, although they did not contain noteworthy quantities of chloroanisoles or chlorophenols, the contaminants generally reported to cause this type of defect. The perception thresholds were studied, together with contamination conditions during winemaking, storage, and bottle-aging. A "musty" off-odor was perceptible on smelling wine containing as little as 4 ng L(-)(1) TBA, and spoilage may be detected by retro-olfaction at even lower concentrations. TBA, produced by O-methylation of its direct precursor, 2,4,6-tribromophenol, generally comes from sources in the winery environment. This paper is the first to identify the sources of a large number of cases of wines polluted during storage in premises where the atmosphere was contaminated with TBA used recently to treat wood, or originating from much older structural elements of the winery, or from used wooden containers. In certain cases, although the initial source had been eliminated, residual pollution adsorbed on walls could be sufficient to make a building unsuitable for storing wooden barrels and plastics, as well as corks, which have been found to be particularly susceptible to contamination by the TBA in the winery atmosphere.

Inflammatory effects of coarse and fine particulate matter in relation to chemical and biological constituents.

There is conflicting evidence in the literature as to the predominant mechanism and also the compositional element(s) that drives the pulmonary inflammatory response of ambient particulate matter (PM). We have investigated the inflammogenic potential of coarse (2.5-10 microm) and fine (<2.5 microm) PM from both a rural and an industrial location in Germany, using bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of rat lungs 18 h post intratracheal instillation with PM. Irrespective of the sampling location, the coarse fraction of PM(10) but not its fine counterpart caused neutrophilic inflammation in rat lungs, in the absence of any severe pulmonary toxicity as indicated by the lack of an increase in lavage protein and lactate dehydrogenase levels. The rural sample of coarse PM also caused a significant increase in the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) content as well as glutathione depletion in the BAL fluid. The contrasting inflammatory responses of the different samples could not be explained by differences in the concentrations of soluble Fe, Cu, V, Ni, Cr, or Al or by the.OH generating capacities of the PM suspensions. However, the effects of the different PM samples were clearly associated with their endotoxin content, as well as their ability to induce interleukin (IL)-8 and TNFalpha from whole blood in vitro. In conclusion, on an equal mass basis, coarse but not fine PM samples from our sampling campaign induced an inflammatory reaction in the lung in the absence of gross cellular lung damage, following intratracheal instillation. Our data also indicate, in accordance with previous independent in vitro observations, that endotoxin or related contaminants may play a role in these in vivo effects.
