First seco-C oleananes from nature.

Abstract

[structure: see text] The triterpenes 8,14-seco-oleana-8(26),13-dien-3beta-ol (1) and its acetyl derivative 2 were isolated from Stevia viscida and Stevia eupatoria, respectively. Their structures were elucidated by 2D NMR, including carbon-carbon connectivity experiments, and confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis of ketone 3. The absolute configuration was determined by NMR analysis of the Mosher esters of 1. The biogenetic implications of the new substances are discussed.

Assignment of the ferriheme resonances of the high-spin forms of nitrophorins 1 and 4 by 1H NMR spectroscopy: comparison to structural data obtained from X-ray crystallography.

In this work, we report the assignment of the majority of the ferriheme resonances of high-spin nitrophorins (NPs) 1 and 4 and compare them to those of NP2, published previously. It is found that the structures of the ferriheme complexes of NP1 and NP4, in terms of the orientation of the histidine imidazole ligand, can be described with good accuracy by NMR techniques and that the angle plot proposed previously for the high-spin form of the NPs (Shokhireva, T. Kh.; Shokhirev, N. V.; Walker, F. A. Biochemistry 2003, 42, 679-693) describes the angle of the effective nodal plane of the axial histidine imidazole in solution. There is an equilibrium between the two heme orientations (A and B), which depends on the heme cavity shape, which can be altered by mutation of amino acids with side chains (phenyl vs tyrosyl) near the potential position where a heme vinyl group would be in one of the isomers. The A:B ratio can be much more accurately measured by NMR spectroscopy than by X-ray crystallography.

Facile construction of lanthanide metallomacrocycles with the bridging imidazolate and triazolate ligands and their ring expansions.

Four novel tri- or tetranuclear organolanthanide metallomacrocycles [Cp2Ln(mu-Im)(THF)3 (Cp = C5H5, Ln = Yb (1), Er (2)], [Cp2Dy(mu-Im)]4(THF)]3 x 2THF (3), and [Cp'2Yb(mu-eta1:eta2-Tz)]4 x 2THF (Cp' = CH3C5H4) (4) have been synthesized through protolysis of Cp3Ln or Cp'3Yb with imidazole or triazole, indicating that both the bridge-ligand size and the lanthanide-ion radii can be applied in the modulation of the metallomacrocycles. Further investigations on the reactivity of complexes 1, 3, and 4 toward phenyl isocyanate reveal that PhNCO inserts readily into the simple bridge Ln-N bonds of 1 and 3 to yield the corresponding insertion products [Cp2Ln(mu-eta1:eta2-OC(Im)NPh)]3 (Ln = Yb (5), Dy (6)) but cannot insert into the Ln-N bond with a mu-eta1:eta2-bonding mode in 4. The novel bridge ligand [OC(Im)NPh] can expand the numbers of the ring members from 12 to 18 in 5 or 16 to 18 in 6. The number of metal atoms in the metallacycles with the ligand [OC(Im)NPh] is independent of the lanthanide-ion size; both trinuclear lanthanide macrocycles are observed in 5 and 6. All of these new complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic properties, and their structures have also been determined through X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis.

Simple and one-pot protocol for synthesis of indene-spiro-oxindoles involving tandem Prins and Friedel-Crafts reactions.

[reaction: see text] A simple and one-pot protocol for the synthesis of indene-spiro-oxindole derivatives via TiCl4-mediated reaction between 1,1-diarylethylenes and isatin derivatives involving construction of two carbon-carbon bonds through tandem Prins and intramolecular Friedel-Crafts (PFC) reactions has been described. A plausible mechanism for this transformation is also presented.
