DentLE. The Dental Learning Environment: a prototype demonstration.

Abstract

DentLE, the Dental Learning Environment is a hypermedia software system being prototyped as part of a research and development project at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. The design seeks to reach beyond single discipline software or cases, and integrate a range of patient problems within a comprehensive dental knowledge base. The approach is to use computer and hypermedia technology to weave together the disciplines of dentistry so that learning occurs in relation to patients, as they appear in the real world. The DentLE system prototype allows the learner to explore information in all the disciplines related to patient problems, as well as other information including "blind alleys" and results of curiosity.

Computer-based learning in orthodontics--a hypertext system.

The computer hypertext system which is described is being used at Birmingham dental hospital to complement the undergraduate training programme in orthodontics. The system is a database of orthodontic information which can be accessed and read in any order. Text screens are linked to numerous graphic images, many of which are interactive. Associated question routines provide a means for student self assessment. The scores from these routines are used to give feedback on student performance and the efficacy of teaching methods. A strength of the programme is the ease of authoring material for inclusion in the database.

AI/Learn/Rheumatology. A computer-assisted educational system for teaching about rheumatic diseases.

Education of health professionals about the rheumatic diseases is in need of improvement. The computer is an instrument that can be used efficiently to educate large numbers of users. With specific educational principles in mind, we developed AI/Learn/Rheumatology, a computer-assisted interactive videodisc system for teaching the rheumatic diseases. While interacting with the user, it conveys knowledge using visual and problem-solving techniques. The system is efficient, enjoyable to use, and useful for small groups and independent study. It is applicable for teaching medical and allied health professional students, postgraduate trainees, and primary care physicians.

The 1990s--interface of cytopathology and new technology.

In physical chemistry, the most unique and dramatic reactions occur at the interface between different phases of matter. An analogy can be drawn between this observation and the interface that currently exists between the traditional practice of cytopathology and the technologies discussed in this editorial. It is natural to be excited about new technologies. They offer the potential to improve our diagnostic ability, to save time, and to expand the range of cytopathology services. Our enthusiasm for new technology should be tempered by the inherent appeal of cytopathology--its relative simplicity. Cytologic diagnoses are possible with a glass slide, extracts of tree bark, and a well-trained observer. This can be rapid and tremendously cost effective, not only identifying the type of abnormality, but often providing prognostic information. New technology, while offering additional information, may not be cost effective, or may not offer more information than is available by traditional methods. Whether or not to accept new technologies is the choice of cytotechnologists and cytopathologists. It is the goal of the Editorial Board of Diagnostic Cytopathology that this be a well-informed choice. The current and coming issues of Diagnostic Cytopathology will describe technological advances in the Focus on Technology section of the journal. We trust that you will find this information useful in your evaluation of new technology.
