A simple calculation for obtaining shunt fractions of portosystemic shunts.

Since the isotopes can not be utilized for veterinary patients in Japan, the authors developed a simple calculation formula of shunt fraction of portosystemic shunt based on the hepatic circulation model. The shunt fraction can be calculated utilizing only 2 portal pressure measurements of pre-shunt ligation and temporary or permanent shunt ligation. The calculated shunt fraction can obtained pre-ligation and post-ligation either temporally or permanent complete shunt ligation: complete ligation group of PSS (n=59) had 48.2 +/- 16.9% of shunt fractions, whereas the partial ligation group (n=48) had 71.6 +/- 10.7% of shunt fractions.

Changes in ultrasonographic echogenicity and visibility of needles with changes in angles of insonation.

PURPOSE: To objectively compare the echogenicity of several types of needles at clinically important angles of insonation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four commercial needles (Echotip, Mini-Stick, Echo-Coat, Surflo) and a prototype dimpled needle were tested in a liver phantom at angles of insonation ranging from 90 degrees to 15 degrees. Photodensity measurement determined echogenicity levels in arbitrary echogenicity units (EU). RESULTS: At 90 degrees angles of insonation all needles were easily seen (60-76 EU) and echogenic levels were similar (P =.264). All values decreased with angulation. From the 35 degrees to 15 degrees angles, the prototype and Echotip needles were superior (P <.05). At 15 degrees the values were 43 EU for the prototype needle, 40 EU for the Echotip needle, 9.0 EU for the Echo-Coat needle, and 5.0 EU for the Surflo needle. CONCLUSION: With angulation, all needles drop in echogenicity, with prototype dimpled and Echotip best maintaining visibility at clinically important angles.

[Examination of liver substance SNR improvement on fast spin echo T1-weighted imaging under breath hold].

On abdominal MRI, since priority is given to time shortening during scanning breath-hold imaging, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and resolution fall victim. We examined the RF power of the 90-degree pulse becomes the maximum signal of fat in T(1)-weighted imaging, and liver with a long T(1) value was noted not to have reached the maximum signal compared with fat. That is, without sacrificing scanning time and resolution by adjusting RF output so that liver would become the maximum signal, it was considered that the SNR of liver substance could be improved. In the phantom experiment, the difference in RF power from which fat and liver became the maximum signal was 1 dB at TR 400 msec. Although a decrease of 10% or less in the fat signal was produced by adding this difference to the RF power obtained by automatic pre-scan, the SNR of liver substance was improved.
