Nonlinear decrease of background fluorescence in polymer thin-films - a survey of materials and how they can complicate fluorescence detection in microTAS.

Abstract

Polymers and plastics are receiving increased attention as materials for microfluidics and microTAS applications. Given the ubiquity of fluorescence detection techniques in micro-analytical systems, the fluorescence properties of polymers and plastics should not be overlooked. We survey some commonly available polymer thin-films for their fluorescence behaviour under standardized conditions to determine which materials are most suitable for high-sensitivity fluorescence detection lab chips. The initial fluorescence intensities of some of the materials surveyed were significantly higher than glass and fused silica controls, and decreased over the three hour period with complex kinetics. We then discuss how this has confounded fluorescence detection in our analytical context, and possible mechanisms for the decrease.

Performance of forward (direct) osmosis process: membrane structure and transport phenomenon.

The performance of a forward (direct) osmosis (FO) process was investigated using a laboratory-scale unit to elucidate the effect of membrane structure and orientation on waterflux. Two types of RO membrane and a FO membrane were tested using ammonium bicarbonate, glucose, and fructose as the draw solution to extract water from a saline feed solution. The FO membrane was able to achieve higher water flux than the RO membranes under the same experimental conditions while maintaining high salt rejection of greater than 97%. Increasing operating temperature increased the water flux in FO process. To investigate the effect of membrane orientation on water flux, the FO membrane was tested normally (dense selective layer facing draw solution) and reversely (dense selective layer facing feed solution). Explanations on transport phenomenon in FO process were proposed which explain the observation that the FO membrane, when used in the normal orientation, performed better due to lesser internal concentration polarization. This study suggests that an ideal FO membrane should consist of a thin dense selective layer without any loose fabric support layer.

Fractionation of dissolved organic matter in mature landfill leachate and its recycling by ultrafiltration and evaporation combined processes.

XAD resin procedure was used to isolate dissolved organic matter (DOM) of a mature leachate collected from a municipal solid waste landfill in Beijing, China. The fulvic acids fraction dominated in collected leachate, accounting for 64% of DOM as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and a high concentration of humic substances (HS) with a value of 441 mg l(-1) was found in the leachate. Molecular size distribution of DOM was also done by using batch ultrafiltration (UF) technique. Two major parts of the molecules of DOM were distributed in the regions of smaller than 1 kDa and 1-3.5 kDa, containing 45% and 43% of DOM as DOC, respectively. The laboratory-scale experiments were conducted to investigate and to develop an overall concept for mature leachate recycling based on UF and evaporation combined processes. Separation factor (SF) was applied to evaluate separation efficiency of UF. The data indicate that SF is strongly correlated with concentration factor. Second retentate from two-stage UF contained relatively high amount of DOM comprising 91% of HS and an insignificant concentration of heavy metals. The SF value for two-stage UF was more than 10. These results demonstrate that two-stage UF could effectively separate and refine HS in mature leachate from inorganic components. For achieving the main requirements as a fertilizer product, second retentate was further concentrated by evaporation, and contents of organic matter and dry-solids were obtained 13 wt.% and 25 wt.%, respectively. This study confirmed the feasibility of recycling HS from mature leachate.

Organized collapse structures in mixtures of chiral ethyl 2-azido-4-fluoro-3-hydroxystearates.

Monolayers of enantiomeric compounds as well as diastereomeric mixtures and racemic/diastereomeric mixtures of ethyl 2-azido-4-fluoro-3-hydroxystearates have been investigated using surface pressure-area isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy. All monolayers collapse out of the liquid-expanded phase, forming 3D collapse structures which were visualized with scanning force microscopy. The enantiomeric compound and the diastereomeric mixtures form unique fiber-like network structures with heights between 20 and 40 nm. Interestingly, the shape of the enantiomeric fiber structures is straight, whereas the diastereomeric mixtures exhibit curved fibers of different sizes. The racemic mixture however forms circular 10 nm high and 20-50 microm broad structures. The shape of unconventional collapse structures could be changed by using distinct ratios of diastereomeric or racemic/diastereomeric mixed compounds.
