Abstract

As a schoolboy, Professor Edward White was encouraged to achieve and take responsibility: qualities he has found have helped him in his lifelong vocation in health care and research. Here, he acknowledges the important role that others have played in his career, and how, although he does not believe in fate, he has often been fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time.
