Polyaniline synthesis and its biosensor application.

Abstract

In this study, five polyaniline compounds were synthesized using different protonic acids and incorporated into a conductometric biosensor used for bovine viral diarrhea virus detection. The biosensor was developed and evaluated by the authors for bacterial pathogen detection in previous studies. The biosensor consisted of two parts: the immunosensor and the electronic data collection system. Liquid sample moved through the immunosensor surface by capillary action. The specificity of the biosensor was based on the unique binding characteristics of the polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies immobilized on the immunosensor. Polyaniline was used in the biosensor architecture as the transducer due to its electronic and bio-molecular properties. Results showed that the biosensor was sensitive at a concentration of 10(3) cell culture infective dose per milliliter (CCID/ml) of BVDV antigens. The promising results on the BVDV detection demonstrated that the conductometric biosensor was interchangeable for different target molecules of detection. Further modification could be implemented to evaluate the biosensor as a rapid diagnostic device to detect other infectious disease outbreaks in livestock population.

New hexamethine-hemicyanine dyes for the development of integrated optochemical sensors.

New far-visible absorbing anilino-cyanine dyes have been synthesised for future application as chromoionophores in integrated waveguide absorbance optodes based on bulk optodes. The effect of the heterocycle, of the substitution of the heterocyclic nitrogen and of the type of heptamethine central ring on the pKa values (4.3-8.2 in ethanol-water solutions and 9.5-11.0 in plasticised PVC membranes), on the spectroscopic characteristics of the dye and on photostability is discussed. pH-selective bulk optodes have been formulated as a first approach to develop ion-selective optodes, and sensitivity, repeatability, lifetime and response time have been determined. The dyes show good analytical behaviour for use as chromoionophores for the development of ion-selective optodes. Reversible (80-87%), fast (tr90%=0.94-2.28 min) and pH-sensitive membranes (slopes of 0.09-0.23 DeltaAbs.pHdec-1, absorbance range 0.19-0.53) have been obtained. Moreover, they exhibit good spectroscopic features for employment with integrated optochemical sensors: absorption maxima of the acidic species in plasticised PVC membranes matched those of 650-670-nm LEDs, high molar absorption coefficients (epsilonacidic=3.5x10(4)-9.3x10(4) L mol-1 cm-1 and epsilonbasic=1.9x10(4)-6.7x10(4) L mol-1 cm-1) and fluorescence.

A new simple method with high precision for determining the toxicity of antifouling paints on brine shrimp larvae (Artemia): first results.

The use of antifouling paints is the only truly effective method for the protection of underwater structures from the development of fouling organisms. In the present study, the surface to volume concept constitutes the basis for the development of a new and improved method for determining the toxicity of antifouling paints on marine organisms. Particular emphasis is placed on the attainment of a standardized uniformity of coated surfaces. Failure to control the thickness of the coat of paint in previous studies of this type, has led to inaccurate evaluation of the relative toxicity of samples. Herein, an attempt is made to solve this problem using a simple technique which gives completely uniform and smooth surfaces. The effectiveness of this technique is assessed through two series of experiments using two different types of test containers: 50 ml modified syringes and 7 ml multiwells. The results of the toxicity experiments follow a normal distribution around the average value which allows to consider these values as reliable for comparison of the level of toxic effect detected with the two types of test containers. The mean lethal concentration L(S/V)(50) in the test series conducted in the multiwells (20.38 mm(2)ml(-1)) does not differ significantly from that obtained in the test series using modified syringes (20.065 mm(2)ml(-1)). It can thus be concluded from this preliminary study that the new method and the two different ways of exposing the test organisms to the antifouling paints and their leachates gave reliable and replicable results.

Doping nanoparticles into polymers and ceramics using ultrasound radiation.

In materials science, sonochemistry is mostly used for the fabrication of nanomaterials, but it has also been used for the polymerization of monomers. The current review is aimed at introducing a new application of sonochemistry to materials science, i.e., the doping of nanoparticles into polymers and ceramic bodies. The introduction will present a short overview of sonochemistry, and will outline the advantages of sonochemistry as a tool for fabricating nanomaterials.
