Efficient destruction of pathogenic bacteria with NiO/SrBi2O4 under visible light irradiation.

The photocatalytic inactivation of pathogenic bacteria in water was investigated systematically with NiO/SrBi2O4 under visible light (lambda > 420 nm) irradiation. The catalyst was found to be highly effective in killing Escherichia coli, a Gram-negative bacterium, and Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium. ESR studies revealed that *OH and O2*- were involved as the active species in the photocatalytic reaction. The decomposition process of the cell wall and the cell membrane was directly observed byTEM and further confirmed by the determination of potassium ion (K+) leakage from the killed bacteria. A possible cell damage mechanism by visible-light-driven NiO/SrBi2O4 is proposed. In addition, the effects of pH, methanol, and inorganic ions on bacterial photocatalytic inactivation were investigated. These results indicated that the electrostatic force interaction of bacteria-catalyst is crucial for high bactericidal efficiency.

Apical leakage of Resilon obturation material.

AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the apical sealing ability of Resilon obturation material. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Forty-two single rooted extracted human teeth were selected and randomly divided into three groups. They were obturated using lateral condensation with gutta-percha and AH 26/AH plus and Resilon; also, 12 root canals were used as control groups. The apical leakage was measured using the dye penetration methodology. RESULTS: The teeth filled with gutta-percha and AH 26 displayed the most apical leakage. The least apical leakage was shown with Resilon. DISCUSSION: The differences in leakage among the groups, gutta-percha with AH 26 (2.4 mm, SD:1.87), gutta-percha with AH plus (2.1 mm, SD: 1.69), and Resilon (1.7 mm, SD:1.32), were statistically significant (p< 0.001). CONCLUSION: Based on the data of this study, all groups produced a satisfactory seal. However, Resilon and Epiphany sealer showed the least apical leakage.

Evidence of two-dimensional superconductivity in the single crystalline nanohybrid of organic-bismuth cuprate.

A coordination compound of HgI(2)(pyridine)(2) can be successfully intercalated into a single crystalline Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(y) high-T(c) superconductor through an interlayer complexation reaction between pyridine molecules and bismuth cuprate pre-intercalated with mercuric iodide. X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopic results clearly demonstrate that the single crystalline nature of the pristine bismuth cuprate remains unchanged even after the intercalation of organic complex as well as those of iodine and mercuric iodide. According to the angle-dependent dc magnetization measurements, the intercalation of bulky organic molecules completely blocks superconductive currents along the c-axis, whereas a superconducting transition along the in-plane direction still occurs in the organic intercalate. In the case of the iodine or mercuric iodide intercalates with smaller lattice expansions, an out-of-plane diamagnetic transition is not wholly quenched but significantly depressed by the intercalation, confirming the reduction of interlayer interaction. The present finding can provide straightforward evidence of the two-dimensionality of high temperature superconductivity in the present cuprate-based nanohybrid material.
