A neural network model with feature selection for Korean speech act classification.

Abstract

A speech act is a linguistic action intended by a speaker. Speech act classification is an essential part of a dialogue understanding system because the speech act of an utterance is closely tied with the user's intention in the utterance. We propose a neural network model for Korean speech act classification. In addition, we propose a method that extracts morphological features from surface utterances and selects effective ones among the morphological features. Using the feature selection method, the proposed neural network can partially increase precision and decrease training time. In the experiment, the proposed neural network showed better results than other models using comparatively high-level linguistic features. Based on the experimental result, we believe that the proposed neural network model is suitable for real field applications because it is easy to expand the neural network model into other domains. Moreover, we found that neural networks can be useful in speech act classification if we can convert surface sentences into vectors with fixed dimensions by using an effective feature selection method.

Forensic evaluation and haplotypes of 19 Y-chromosomal STR loci in Koreans.

In this study, 19 Y-specific STR loci (DYS19, DYS389I/II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS385, DYS388, DYS434, DYS435, DYS436, DYS437, DYS438, DYS439, DYS446, DYS449, and DYS464) were analyzed in 301 unrelated Korean males by three multiplex PCR systems. The haplotype diversity using the classical set of Y-STRs (DYS19, DYS389I/II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, and DYS385; multiplex I) was 0.9963. For the same individuals, the haplotype diversity value using the new set of highly informative Y-STRs (DYS385, DYS446, DYS449, and DYS464; multiplex III) was 0.9989, while that using the combined set of Y-STRs by adding DYS388 to the previously studied DYS434, DYS435, DYS436, DYS437, DYS438, and DYS439 (multiplex II) was 0.9509. A total of 297 different haplotypes were identified using the 19 Y-STR markers, of which 293 were unique and 4 were found twice. The overall haplotype diversity was 0.9999. The evaluation of the information of selected markers by combination of each marker with the minimal haplotype showed that DYS434, DYS435, DYS436, DYS437, and DYS438 do not significantly contribute to increment of haplotype diversity. However, respective conjunction of DYS464, DYS449, and DYS446 with the minimal haplotype considerably increased the haplotype diversity. Especially, DYS464 is expected to be the most useful marker that can be included in the expanded minimal haplotype. These results including the haplotype data at 19 Y-STR loci in the present study would provide useful information in forensic practice in a Korean population.

Positive association of the human GABA-A-receptor beta 2 subunit gene haplotype with schizophrenia in the Chinese Han population.

A converging body of evidence implicates the gamma-amino butyric acid neurotransmitter system in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Recently, Lo et al. reported strong positive association between schizophrenia and GABRB2, demonstrated by single markers and haplotypes of five markers in introns of GABRB2, rs6556547, rs1816071, rs194072, rs252944, and rs187269. To validate this linkage disequilibrium report, we genotyped these five SNPs and additional rs1816072 in 352 Chinese Han family trios. Though we failed to detect any positive results in single markers, we did find a significant haplotypic association (global p = 0.00157-0.00588) which had not been identified in Lo's study. Our data indicated that the haplotype 'GACTCT' (p = 0.00215, frequency = 53.6%) was overtransmitted which suggests that GABRB2 is in linkage disequilibrium with schizophrenia in the Chinese Han population. The difference between the two studies may be due to the respective analytic power of the two designs. These two independent studies highlighting linkage disequilibrium support the potential involvement of GABRB2 or a nearby gene in the genetic etiology of schizophrenia.

Carriers of three polymorphisms of cholesteryl ester transfer protein gene are at increased risk to coronary heart disease in a Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: The cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is a key participant in the reverse transport of cholesterol from the peripheral tissue to the liver and the polymorphism in the CETP gene may therefore alter the susceptibility to coronary heart disease (CHD). The aim of the present study was to screen the CETP gene for new single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and to determine whether SNPs at important cholesterol metabolism gene loci might exert effects on the risk to CHD in Chinese. METHODS: Genomic DNA samples were collected from 203 Chinese patients with CHD and 209 age- and gender-matched controls. The coding region, adjacent intronic sequences and promoter region (totally 5501 bp) of the CETP gene were screened based on a combination of polymerase chain reaction, denaturing high performance liquid chromatography and DNA sequencing. The association of individual single nucleotide polymorphisms with CHD was assessed by univariate, multivariate analysis and haplotype analysis. RESULTS: Fifteen SNPs were identified in the CETP gene including 12 novel ones, of which, 3 were in promoter region, 1 in exon 10, and other 9 in introns. The frequencies of -644C, +13054T, 296Q, and 442G alleles were considerably higher, while the frequency of +9907A allele lower, in CHD patients than those in controls (p=0.016, p=0.043, p=0.006, p=0.006, and p=0.029, respectively). The results of individual polymorphism analyses were confirmed by haplotype analysis for the combination of these 5 SNPs. The -644A/C, L296Q, and D442G polymorphisms were found to be associated with CHD in this Chinese population by multivariate analysis (p=0.009, p=0.024, and p=0.007, respectively). The adjusted odds ratio for the development of CHD for the -644C allele carriers was 1.63 compared with -644AA genotype (95% CI 1.05-2.78; p<0.01), 1.71 for the 296Q allele carriers relative to 296LL genotype (95% CI 1.10-2.89; p<0.05), and 1.31 for the 442G allele carriers relative to 442DD genotype (95% CI 1.02-2.56; p<0.01), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant relation between the polymorphisms in the CETP gene and the development of CHD, and individuals homozygous or heterozygous for the -644C, 296Q, and 442G alleles of the CETP gene are at increased risk to develop CHD in this Chinese population.
