Abstract

Tissue engineering applies the principles of biology and engineering to the development of functional substitutes, for example 1) cells, 2) scaffolds, 3) some cytokines, for lost tissues. The meaning of this bone regeneration is that it decreases the needed tissues and burden of patients. In this time, we applied to mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from the own bone marrow as cell sources. MSCs are thought to be multipotent cells that can replicate. And we also used a beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) as a scaffold and fibrin glue as materials to regenerate a injectable bone and we injected into the subcutaneous space on the dorsum of the rat. After 8 weeks of implantation, it could be confirmed newly formed bone and fibrin glue functioned as a injectable materials without loosing the cell activity and the proliferation of MSCs. Next we applied Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to improve the ability of osteogenesis. PRP contains some cytokines and are expected to promote the increase of osteogenesis. The merit is not immunity rejection from autologous blood collected in the immediate preoperative period. The admixtures of PRP or fibrin glue have fluidity and gel-like consistency as the thrombin mixing. They can be injected with a syringe in tissues. We named this "Injectable Bone". According to the histological observations, the MSCs with PRP were well formed mature bone and neovascularization compared with control (defect only) after 8 weeks implantation. These results demonstrated that the mixture of MSCs and PRP were useful as injectable bone substitute and its ability of bone regeneration is almost equal to autogenous particulate cancellous bone and marrow (PCBM).

[Why Danes are smug--a comparative study of life satisfaction in the EU].

Danes are by far the most content citizens in the EU. We test a number of (im)plausible hypotheses and find that the solid depth of Danish well-being is multifactorial, but with two decisive factors: winning the 1992 European Championship in football and having constantly low (and undoubtedly realistic) expectations for the coming year. With an undoubtedly disappointing 2007 in store, we do not wish to foster false hopes. However, some tepid comfort might perhaps be taken from the fact that if you lower your expectations enough, you might feel a bit better next New Year.

[The anatomy lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt (1632) and the findings during dissection of the forearm of a cadaver: anatomical discrepancies].

OBJECTIVE: To compare The anatomy lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt (1632) with the findings during dissection of the forearm of a cadaver. DESIGN: Descriptive. METHOD: The left forearm of a 41-year-old white male cadaver was dissected, photographs being taken at every stage of dissection. The anatomical structures in the original painting and during dissection were described and compared. At dissection, several structures were displaced in an attempt to reproduce the anatomical structures as shown in the painting. RESULTS: Dissection revealed four anatomical differences in comparison with Rembrandt's painting: (a) the muscle belly seen at the proximal ulnar side of the forearm in the painting was not seen on dissection; section of the insertion of the M. flexor carpi radialis and transposition of this muscle to the location of the muscle belly created the possibility of lifting up the M. flexor digitorum superficialis and reproducing the muscle belly; (b) in the painting, Tulp lifted only the M. flexor digitorum superficialis, but the amount of muscle tissue found in the forceps was increased in the painting compared with the dissection; (c) the positions of the bellies of the M. flexor digitorum superficialis to the index finger and 5th digit and to the 3rd and 4th digits were found to be reversed; (d) the longitudinal white structure situated in the ulnar part of the 5th digit in the painting was not found on dissection. This may have been an anatomical variant of the ulnar nerve. CONCLUSION: The anatomical characteristics of the painting could not be reproduced by dissection of the forearm of a cadaver.

[Developing COPD--25 years follow-up study of the general population].

Smokers are more prone to developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than non-smokers. This knowledge comes from studies spanning 10 years or less. We used data from The Copenhagen City Heart Study to determine the 25-year absolute risk of developing COPD in healthy individuals. The 25-year incidence of moderate and severe COPD was 20.7% and 3.6%, respectively. Smoking cessation, especially early in the course of the follow-up, decreased the risk substantially. The absolute risk of developing COPD among smokers is at least 25%, which is higher than previously anticipated.
