Membrane reactors at Degussa.

Abstract

The review covers the development of membrane reactor technologies at Degussa for the synthesis of fine chemicals. The operation of fed-batch or continuous biocatalytic processes in the enzyme membrane reactor (EMR) is well established at Degussa. Degussa has experience of running EMRs from laboratory gram scale up to a production scale of several hundreds of tons per year. The transfer of the enzyme membrane reactor from biocatalysis to chemical catalysis in the chemzyme membrane reactor (CMR) is discussed. Various homogeneous catalysts have been investigated in the CMR, and the scope and limitation of this new technique is discussed.

Unraveling the ecological success of Iodidimonas in a bioreactor treating oil and gas produced water.

UNLABELLED: Iodidimonas sp., a bacterium found in bioreactors treating oil and gas produced water as well as iodide-rich brines, has garnered attention for its unique ability to oxidize iodine. However, little is known about the metabolic capabilities that enable Iodidimonas sp. to thrive in certain unique ecological niches. In this study, we isolated, characterized, and sequenced three strains belonging to the Iodidimonas genus from the sludge of a membrane bioreactor used for produced water treatment. We investigated the genomic features of these isolates and compared them with the four publicly available isolate genomes from this genus, as well as a metagenome-assembled genome from the source bioreactor. Our Iodidimonas isolates had several genes associated with mitigating salinity, heavy metal, and organic compound stress, which likely help these bacteria to survive in produced water. Phenotyping tests revealed that while the isolates could utilize a wide variety of simple carbon substrates, they failed to degrade aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, consistent with the lack of genes associated with common hydrocarbon degradation pathways in their genomes. We hypothesize that these microbes may lead a scavenging lifestyle in the bioreactor and similar iodide-rich brines. IMPORTANCE: Occupying a niche habitat and having few representative isolates, the genus Iodidimonas is a relatively understudied alphaproteobacterial group. Its ability to corrode pipes in iodine production facilities has economic implications, and its ability to generate potentially carcinogenic iodinated organic compounds during treatment of oil and gas produced water may cause environmental and health concerns with the recycling of treated water. Therefore, detailed characterization of the metabolic potential of the Iodidimonas isolates in this study both sheds light on their adaptation to the environmental conditions they inhabit and has environmental and economic significance.

Kinetics of iron oxidation by Leptospirillum ferriphilum dominated culture at pH below one.

The kinetics of ferrous iron oxidation by Leptospirillum ferriphilum (L. ferriphilum) dominated culture was studied in the concentration range of 0.1-20 g Fe(2+)/L and the effect of ferric iron (0-60 g Fe(3+)/L) on Fe(2+) oxidation was investigated at pH below one. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of PCR amplified 16S rRNA genes followed by partial sequencing confirmed that the bacterial community was dominated by L. ferriphilum. In batch assays, Fe(2+) oxidation started without lag phase and the oxidation was completed within 1 to 60 h depending on the initial Fe(2+) concentration. The specific Fe(2+) oxidation rates increased up to around 4 g/L and started to decrease at above 4 g/L. This implies substrate inhibition of Fe(2+) oxidation at higher concentrations. Haldane equation fitted the experimental data reasonably well (R(2) = 0.90). The maximum specific oxidation rate (q(m)) was 2.4 mg/mg VS . h, and the values of the half saturation (K(s)) and self inhibition constants (K(i)) were 413 and 8,650 mg/L, respectively. Fe(2+) oxidation was competitively inhibited by Fe(3+) and the competitive inhibition constant (K(ii)) was 830 mg/L. The time required to reach threshold Fe(2+) concentration was around 1 day and 2.3 days with initial Fe(3+) concentration of 5 and 60 g/L, respectively. The threshold Fe(2+) concentration, below which no further Fe(2+) oxidation occurred, linearly increased with increasing initial Fe(2+) and Fe(3+) concentrations. Fe(2+) oxidation proceeds by L. ferriphilum dominated culture at pH below 1 even in the presence of 60 g Fe(3+)/L. This indicates potential of using and biologically regenerating concentrated Fe(3+) sulfate solutions required, for example, in indirect tank leaching of ore concentrates.

Prediction of volumetric productivity of an outdoor photobioreactor.

Volumetric productivity of Monodus subterraneus cultivated in an outdoor pilot-plant bubble column was predicted with a mathematical model. Two border cases to model the photobioreactor were chosen. Firstly, a model with no light integration in which it is assumed that microalgae can adapt immediately to local light conditions. Secondly, full light integration implicating that microalga can convert all absorbed light with a photosynthetic yield based on average light intensity. Because temperature and light conditions in our photobioreactor changed during the day, photosynthetic yields at any combination of temperature and light intensity were needed. These were determined in repeated-batch lab-scale experiments with an experimental design. The model was evaluated in an outdoor bubble column at different natural light conditions and different temperatures. Volumetric productivities in the bubble column were predicted and compared with experimental volumetric productivities. The light integration model over-estimated productivity, while the model in which we assumed no light integration under-estimated productivity. Light integration occurred partly (47%) during the period investigated. The average observed biomass yield on light was 0.60 g.mol(-1). The model of partly light integration predicted an average biomass yield on light of 0.57 g.mol(-1) and predicted that productivity could have been increased by 19% if culture temperature would have been maintained at 24 degrees C.
