[A HPF application to parallelize a 2-D PDE model].

Abstract

Many practical numerical applications would require a parallel implementation in order to obtain a satisfactory response in a reasonable amount of time. In this sense, this work shows a parallel implementation of an explicit scheme of finite difference (FD) proposed by Kelly et. al., to solve the Partial Differential Equation (PDE / EDDP) of the Wave Propagation problem in an elastic, homogeneous or heterogeneous, two-dimensional medium. High-Performance-Fortran (HPF) will be used here for this purpose. This report shows measures of time on a PC-Cluster using 1, 2, and 4 processors with different sizes of data grid. In addition, a comparative test is included in which the cluster was initially connected using a Fast-Ethernet card, and then connected by a Myrinet card, using a grid size of 2500 x 2500 in both cases. The execution time achieved with two processors was highly satisfactory for all cases. In analogous conditions, the performance obtained with a Myrinet interconnection was better than the one obtained with a Fast-Ethernet interconnection. The scheme mentioned above has showed an excellent numerical result as it could be seen on the images included in this work. [Why Danes are smug--a comparative study of life satisfaction in the EU].

Danes are by far the most content citizens in the EU. We test a number of (im)plausible hypotheses and find that the solid depth of Danish well-being is multifactorial, but with two decisive factors: winning the 1992 European Championship in football and having constantly low (and undoubtedly realistic) expectations for the coming year. With an undoubtedly disappointing 2007 in store, we do not wish to foster false hopes. However, some tepid comfort might perhaps be taken from the fact that if you lower your expectations enough, you might feel a bit better next New Year.

[Developing COPD--25 years follow-up study of the general population].

Smokers are more prone to developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than non-smokers. This knowledge comes from studies spanning 10 years or less. We used data from The Copenhagen City Heart Study to determine the 25-year absolute risk of developing COPD in healthy individuals. The 25-year incidence of moderate and severe COPD was 20.7% and 3.6%, respectively. Smoking cessation, especially early in the course of the follow-up, decreased the risk substantially. The absolute risk of developing COPD among smokers is at least 25%, which is higher than previously anticipated.

[Cochrane reviews compared with industry-supported and other meta-analyses of the same drugs--secondary publication].

24 Cochrane reviews were compared with other, closely matched, meta-analyses of the same drugs. The quality score was highest for Cochrane reviews (7 vs. 2, p < 0.01). Of 8 industry-supported reviews, 7 with conclusions all recommended the experimental drug without reservations, compared with none of the Cochrane reviews (p = 0.02) although the estimated treatment effect was similar on average (p = 0.64). Industry-supported reviews were less transparent, had few reservations about methodological limitations of the included trials, and should be read with caution.
