Nanoconstructions based on double-stranded nucleic acids.

Abstract

We describe the formation and properties of nanoconstruction that consists of the double-stranded DNA molecules located at distance of 35-50 A in the spatial structure of particles of their cholesteric liquid-crystalline dispersions and cross-linked by artificial nanobridges. The resulting nanostructures possess the peculiar spatial and optical properties.

Formation, stability and properties of multilayer emulsions for application in the food industry.

The formation of multilayered interfaces around oil droplets in oil-in-water emulsions provides food technologists with a novel means of improving the quality and stability of many food products, as well as the ability to develop novel encapsulation and delivery systems. This article reviews the basic principles of multilayer emulsion formation, discusses the factors that influence the characteristics of the interfaces formed, and highlights the relationship between interfacial properties and emulsion functionality. Finally, it highlights some potential applications of the multilayer emulsion technology in the food industry for improving the stability of emulsions to environmental stresses or for developing controlled or triggered release systems.

Electromigration behavior of a mixture of chitosan oligomers at different concentrations.

In this study, the effect of the concentration of a chitosan oligomer mixture on its electrophoretic behavior was studied as a function of pH and ionic strength added. It was shown that the concentration has a significant effect on the average electrophoretic mobility of the chitosan oligomer mixture and on isoelectric point. At a concentration of 3%, the ionic strength added did not show any effect on the electromigration behavior of the chitosan oligomer mixture. By decreasing the concentration of the chitosan oligomer mixture, ionic strength showed a significant effect on the average electrophoretic mobility but not on the isoelectric point. The highest shift of the isoelectric point was recorded in water at 0.003% concentration of the oligomer mixture. Under these conditions, the isoelectric point was at pH 5 whereas it was at pH 8 at 3% concentration of chitosan oligomer mixture. Electrophoretic measurements were also taken in water/ethanol aqueous medium. By adding ethanol to the medium, the average electrophoretic mobility decreased. This would have been caused by the increase in viscosity of the medium. Increasing ethanol ratio in the running medium, the isoelectric point moved from pH 5 in water up to pH 6-8 dependently on chitosan oligomer mixture concentration and ethanol content of the medium.

A novel amperometric immunosensor based on Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles/chitosan composite film for determination of ferritin.

A novel amperometric immunosensor was developed by immobilizing ferritin antibody (FeAb) on the surface of Fe(3)O(4) magnetic nanoparticles/chitosan composite film modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). This material combined the advantages of inorganic Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles with the organic polymer chitosan. The stepwise assembly procedure of the immunosensor was characterized by means of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and ac impedance. The K(3)Fe(CN)(6)/K(4)Fe(CN)(6) was used as a marker to probe the interface and to determinate ferritin. The factors that could influence the performance of the resulting immunosensor were studied in detail. After the immunosensor was incubated with ferritin for 32 min at 35 degrees C, the DPV current decreased linearly with the logarithm of ferritin concentration in the range from 20 to 500 ng mL(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.995 and a detection limit of 7.0 ng mL(-1). This immunosensor was used to analyze ferritin in human serum samples. The analytical results showed that the developed immunoassay was comparable with the radioimmunoassay (RIA), and the studied immunosensor exhibited good accuracy, high sensitivity, and long-term stability for 3 weeks, which implies a promising alternative approach for detecting ferritin in clinical diagnosis.
