[Aortic aneurysm].

Abstract

Thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms have potential risk of sudden death, because they have a tendency of rupture. The risk of rupture is high, if they are saccular type or the diameters of them are large enough. Acute aortic dissection has a high risk of sudden death due to cardiac tamponade, if the dissection involves the ascending aorta.

Microarray technology in the investigation of diseases of myocardium with special reference to infection.

Microarrays are now routinely employed to characterize gene expression of thousands of genes from a single hybridization. The genome wide gene expression profile aids in the understanding of genes that may be regulated in a particular pathological condition. This paper provides an overview of microarray technology and its recent developments followed by its usage in studies of cardiovascular disease and how it pertains to viral and parasitic infections of the heart.

The complex between activated protein C and protein C inhibitor: A clinically useful indicator of aortic aneurysms?

The concentration of the complex between activated protein C and the protein C inhibitor reflects the degree of activation of blood coagulation. A sandwich method has been devised that measures the complex concentration in blood plasma. A key feature of the method is that the catching monoclonal antibody recognizes a complex-dependent neoepitope in PCI, which is a prerequisite, since the concentration of uncomplexed PCI is approximately 10(4)-fold higher than that of the complex. In patients with atherosclerotic disease, those with aortic aneurysms exhibit a three-fold increase in complex concentration compared to that of normal subjects.
