Quality assurance issues and PACS.

Abstract

Quality assessment and assurance is a growing concern in all areas of health care. The concern is fueled by a body of evidence that indicates that quality of care is not optimal, and in many instances, is unacceptably low. Although different standards for quality have been proposed, health outcome is the ultimate standard, since improving health is the goal of the health care system. The effects of PACS on health outcome are not known. A PAC system has the potential to improve quality, especially if it makes the diagnostic process more efficient, but evidence that such improvement actually occurs is so far lacking.

Simplified method for determining the radiochemical purity of 99mTc-MAG3.

UNLABELLED: 99mTc-Mercaptoacetyltriglycine is used for dynamic renal imaging, and the summary of product characteristics (SPC) for the European formulation specifies a shelf life of 1 or 4 h, depending on the reconstitution volume of the kit. To minimize the time required to test the radiochemical purity, a simplified quality control method was developed. METHODS: To satisfy the recommendations of the International Commission on Harmonisation, results obtained with the methods described in the European and American SPCs were compared with those obtained with the simplified method. Further validation of the new method was performed by comparison with the standard 2-strip thin-layer chromatographic method as well as tests for linearity and limits of detection and quantification. RESULTS: The simplified method provided results comparable to those provided by the registered SPC methods but was more rapid to perform and used smaller volumes of solvents. CONCLUSION: The simplified method is a reasonable alternative to the registered SPC methods.

Using the AHRQ quality indicators to improve health care quality.

In summary, the AHRQ QIs are a set of readily available programs that can be downloaded without charge from the AHRQ Web site. The methodology is completely open and accessible to all users. The QI software can be applied to hospital administrative data that is available within individual institutions or from state data organizations and hospital associations and can provide valuable insights into health care quality at extremely low cost. The QIs have been incorporated into numerous quality assessment reports, including hospital-specific reports, with the aim of improving health care quality at a reasonable cost. With enhancements currently underway, the QIs will be an even more valuable part of the toolkit to improve health care quality in the United States.
