In female ibex up to an age of six years, a sufficiently accurate age determination can be made based on the degree of skeletal ossification and length of the bones (s. Table 2). Definitive ossification of the epiphyseal discs with the body of the vertebrae in the female ibex is not complete at end of the growth period. Observations with regard to sex-related dimorphism of the skeleton will not be possible until corresponding investigations have been carried out on the buck.
The properness of diagnosing the premature menarche as isolated clinical syndrome is often questioned. A long-term observation od 2 girls with premature menarche has been described. A discussion is presented about the role of imbalance within the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonads axis and the role of disturbances in peripheral responsiveness to sex hormones in the patho-mechanism of premature menarche.
The authors present the results of evaluation of the skeletal maturation in 579 children aged 1-5 years. Bone maturation was evaluated, based on skeletal age, by the Tanner-Whitehouse II method (Tanner et al., 1975). It was found that girls up to the age of three years had lower and in the more advanced age groups higher values of skeletal age than boys. Boys were retarded as regards skeletal age in relation to chronological age on average by 0.28 years and girls by 0.25 years.
