Utah's IBIS-PH: an innovative user interface solution for Web-based data query systems.

Abstract

The ability to make good Web-based data query system (WDQS) project management decisions requires an understanding of the trade-offs inherent among various technology options. This article presents the current options available for the user interface and data display and compares the advantages and disadvantages of each for use in a WDQS. Relevant options are also discussed for back-end technologies such as Web and application servers and data storage mechanisms. We explain our decisions in developing the Indicator-based Information System for Public Health (IBIS-PH) query system to increase the probability of success and minimize risk. Finally, we compare the resulting IBIS-PH application characteristics with our original design requirements: broad public access; rich, interactive, and easy-to-use interface; portability; accessibility; maintainability of software and interface; supportability; low cost; and security.

Choosing a radiology workstation: technical and clinical considerations.

Choosing a workstation for daily use in the interpretation of digital radiologic images can be a daunting task. There are numerous products available on the market, but differentiating among them and deciding on what is best for a particular environment can be confusing and frustrating. There is no "one-size-fits-all" workstation, so users must consider a variety of factors when choosing a workstation. This review summarizes the critical elements in a radiology workstation and the characteristics one should be aware of and look for in the selection of a workstation. Issues pertaining to both hardware and software aspects of medical workstations, including interface design, are reviewed, particularly as they may affect the interpretation process.

Optical screen for direct projection of integral imaging.

We describe a way to display three-dimensional images by integral imaging using an ordinary projector. We first explain a method that uses a large-aperture converging lens, then we explain the proposed method that uses two sets of lens array. Based on the principle of this new approach, front projection as well as rear projection is possible. Only a proper viewing area can be formed on the optical screen by this method, which improves the brightness of images on the screen. The projector itself does not need an additional optical system. We report on the results of an experiment carried out to confirm the validity of the proposed method.

O3-DPACS Open-Source Image-Data Manager/Archiver and HDW2 Image-Data Display: an IHE-compliant project pushing the e-health integration in the world.

After many years of study, development and experimentation of open PACS and Image workstation solutions including management of medical data and signals (DPACS project), the research and development at the University of Trieste have recently been directed towards Java-based, IHE compliant and multi-purpose servers and clients. In this paper an original Image-Data Manager/Archiver (O3-DPACS) and a universal Image-Data Display (HDW2) are described. O3-DPACS is also part of a new project called Open Three (O3) Consortium, promoting Open Source adoption in e-health at European and world-wide levels. This project aims to give a contribution to the development of e-health through the study of Healthcare Information Systems and the contemporary proposal of new concepts, designs and solutions for the management of health data in an integrated environment: hospitals, Regional Health Information Organizations and citizens (home-care, mobile-care and ambient assisted living).
