Computer program for automated sleep depth estimation.

Abstract

In this article, we present a new implementation of an amplitude-independent method for continuous-scale sleep depth estimation. Having been implemented as an add-on analysis module under commercially available biosignal recording and analysis software, it can be easily applied in clinical routine. The software gives the user full freedom to change all the analysis parameters inside theoretical limits. Computational sleep depth profiles produced by the presented software compare favourably with visual classifications. Future work will concentrate on systematic optimization of analysis parameters, further evaluation of the method with disturbed sleep and application of the method for automated adaptive sleep analysis.

The emergence of radiofrequency identification tags: applications in surgery.

Radiofrequency identification (RFID) is a wireless method of automatic identification. Currently, RFID tags are emerging into our environment in many aspects of our lives. Applications are being developed in a variety of fields, including health care. Aspects of surgical care will lend themselves to this approach. This technology could provide large amounts of data that not only carry the promise of improving health care, but also may have an impact on personal aspects of our daily lives. Each of us must become familiar with the risks and benefits of RFID use.

Automatic lexeme acquisition for a multilingual medical subword thesaurus.

PURPOSE: We present a method for the automated acquisition of a multilingual medical lexicon (for Spanish, French and Swedish) to be used within the framework of a medical cross-language text retrieval system. METHODS: For the lexical acquisition process, we incorporate seed lexicons and lists of trusted term translations derived from the UMLS Metathesaurus. The seed lexicons for Spanish, French and Swedish are automatically generated from (previously manually constructed) Portuguese, German and English sources by simple string transformations. Lexical and semantic hypotheses are then validated by processing pairs of term translations. In a last step, we use the cleaned list of "approved" translations in order to augment, step by step, the target dictionaries by processing the parallel corpora in terms of co-occurrence patterns of hypothesized translation equivalents which cannot be derived by simple character substitutions. RESULTS: An existing multilingual lexicon for the medical domain with about 60,000 entries for English, German, and Portuguese was automatically augmented by more then 17,000 new lexemes for Spanish, French, and Swedish. CONCLUSIONS: Our approach constitutes a promising method for the automated creation of new lexicon entries and their linkage to semantic identifiers.

Filing of applications and requirements for widow's and widower's benefits. Final rule.

We are revising one of our regulations to clarify that we will protect a title II claimant's filing date as of the date the claimant or other proper applicant on the claimant's behalf completes and transmits to the Social Security Administration (SSA) the Personal Information Identification data on the Internet Social Security Benefit Application (ISBA). This revision addresses an aspect of implementing the ISBA to provide certain rights to Internet filers that we afford to other filers. In addition, we are correcting one word in a different title II regulation. The revision is necessary to correctly reflect the circumstances under which a claimant for widow's or widower's benefits as the insured person's surviving divorced spouse would be considered "unmarried."
