Customized document validation to support a flexible XML-based knowledge management framework.

Abstract

This paper describes a validation architecture used within Intermountain Health Care's Clinical Knowledge Repository (CKR). The architecture provides additional functionality that complements XML Schema validation, producing user-friendly error messages and enabling validation rules reuse. The validation architecture helps document authors to fix their own errors. As a result, less than 1% of all documents in the CKR are considered invalid.

[Knowledge identification and management in a surgery department].

The hospital is an enterprise in which the surgery department represents a specific healthcare unit. The purpose of the surgery department, like that of any other enterprise, is assumed to be indefinite survival; to that end, it must be able to achieve and maintain a competitive advantage in the long term. Nevertheless, each surgery department, like each enterprise, can precisely define the scope of the above-mentioned terms, the main source of an enterprise's competitive advantage being its knowledge stock. Knowledge is recognized as being the basis of competitive success among institutions. This article presents the concept and classification of knowledge and discusses how it should be identified, inventoried, and managed. Special emphasis is placed on healthcare activity, since this sector presents certain characteristics distinguishing it from other sectors of economic and business activity.

Making the procedure manual come alive: A prototype relational database and dynamic website model for the management of nursing information.

The nursing procedural manual is an essential resource for clinical practice, yet insuring its currency and availability at the point of care remains an unresolved information management challenge for nurses. While standard HTML-based web pages offer significant advantage over paper compilations, employing emerging computer science tools offers even greater promise. This paper reports on the creation of a prototypical dynamic web-based nursing procedure manual driven by a relational database. We created a relational database in MySQL to manage, store, and link the procedure information, and developed PHP files to guide content retrieval, content management, and display on demand in browser-viewable format. This database driven dynamic website model is an important innovation to meet the challenge of content management and dissemination of nursing information.

Avoiding literature overload in the medical domain.

The retrieval of patient-related literature is hampered by the large size of medical literature. Various computer systems have been developed to assist physicians during information retrieval. However, in general, physicians lack the time and skills required to employ such systems effectively. Our goal is to investigate to what extent a physician can be provided with patient-related literature without spending extra time and without acquiring additional skills. In previous research we developed a method to formulate a physician's patient-related information needs automatically, without requiring any interaction between the physician and the system. The formulated information needs can be used as a starting point for literature retrieval. As a result we found that the number of information needs formulated per physician was quite high and had to be reduced to avoid a literature overload. In this paper we present four types of knowledge that may be used to accomplish a reduction in the number of information needs. The usefulness of each of these knowledge types depends heavily on the specific cause underlying the multitude of information needs. To determine the nature of the cause, we performed an experimental analysis. The results of the analysis led us to conclude that the knowledge types can be ordered according to their appropriateness as follows: (1) knowledge concerning temporal aspects, (2) knowledge concerning a physician's specialism, (3) domain knowledge, and (4) a user model. Further research has to be performed, in particular on precisely assessing the performance of each type of knowledge within our domain.
