Nonlinear spontaneous oscillations at the liquid/liquid interface produced by surfactant dissolution in the bulk phase.

Abstract

The results of theoretical and experimental studies of spontaneous nonlinear oscillations produced at the liquid/liquid interface by surfactant transfer from a point source situated in one of the bulk phases are presented. The theoretical analysis is based on the direct numerical simulation of the system evolution. The experiments are performed for the heptane/water interface using middle-chain aliphatic alcohols as surfactants. The results for the oil/water interface are compared with the corresponding data obtained for the air/water interface. The presented results allow the conclusion that auto-oscillations at the air/liquid and liquid/liquid interfaces are governed by very similar mechanisms but their characteristics are strongly dependent on the properties of the two contacting media, in particular, on the surfactant partition coefficient.

All-atom contact potential approach to protein thermostability analysis.

In this paper we use all-atom potential energy to define and analyze the inter-residue contacts in mesophilic and thermophilic proteins. Fifteen families of proteins are selected and each family has two representative proteins with greatly different preferred environmental temperatures. We find that both the number and energy of the contacts defined in this way show stronger correlations with the preferred temperatures of proteins than other factors used before. We also find that the charged-polar and charged-nonpolar residue contacts not only have larger contact numbers but also have lower single contact energies. Furthermore, the most important is that most of the thermophilic proteins have more charged-polar and charged-nonpolar residue contacts than their mesophilic counterparts. This suggests that they may play an important role in the thermostability of proteins, except usual charged-charged and nonpolar-nonpolar residue contacts. Charged residues may exert their profound influence by forming contacts not only with other charged residues but also with polar or nonpolar residues, thus further increasing the strength of contact network and then the thermostability of proteins.

A prediction of accelerator-produced activation products.

The operational radiation protection issues associated with the Z-Machine accelerator located at Sandia National Laboratories are large: a variety of materials can be placed into the machine; these materials can be subjected to a variety of nuclear reactions, producing a variety of activation products. Without full understanding of the most likely contaminants, a realistic identification of the radiological hazards and appropriate controls is not possible. This paper presents a process developed to provide a realistic prediction of the accelerator-produced radionuclides of interest.

Unified model for the ultrafast decay of pyrimidine nucleobases.

Ultrafast decay processes detected after absorption of UV radiation in gas-phase pyrimidine nucleobases uracil, thymine, and cytosine are ascribed to the barrierless character of the pathway along the low-lying 1(pipi*) hypersurface connecting the Franck-Condon region with an out-of-plane distorted ethene-like conical intersection with the ground state. Longer lifetime decays and low quantum yield emission are on the other hand related to the presence of a 1(pipi*) state planar minimum on the S1 surface and the barriers to access other conical intersections. A unified model for the three systems is established on the basis of accurate multiconfigurational CASPT2 calculations, whereas the effect of the different levels of theory on the results is carefully analyzed.
