Abstract

Water-soluble poly(phenylene ethynylene) carrying beta-cyclodextrin was prepared; the polymer exhibited a fluorescence color change or quenching, depending on the kind of guest.

Capillary electrophoresis of the mycotoxin zearalenone using cyclodextrin-enhanced fluorescence.

Certain of the cyclodextrins are capable of significantly enhancing the native fluorescence of the estrogenic mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEN). Twenty-two cyclodextrins (CDs) were screened for their ability to enhance the fluorescence of ZEN in a capillary electrophoresis-laser induced fluorescence (CE-LIF) format. Of the CDs that were examined heptakis (2,6-di-O-methyl)-beta-CD gave the greatest enhancement. The heptakis (2,6-di-O-methyl)-beta-CD was applied to the development of a CE-LIF method for detection of ZEN in maize. The resulting method was capable of detecting ZEN with a limit of quantitation of 5 ng/g maize. Recoveries of ZEN from maize spiked over the range from 5 ng/g to 500 ng/g averaged 103.1+/-8.5% (n=20). The CE-LIF method will be useful for future studies of ZEN in maize.

Evaluation of chiral ionic liquids as additives to cyclodextrins for enantiomeric separations by capillary electrophoresis.

A great interest has been drawn these last years towards ionic liquids in analytical chemistry, especially for separation methods. Recent synthesis of chiral ILs opened the way of the evaluation of new potential selectors for enantiomeric separations. This work focused on the evaluation of two chiral ILs (ethyl- and phenylcholine of bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) by CE. Particular selectivities are awaited by exploiting unique ion-ion or ion-dipole interactions and by tailoring the nature of the cation and the anion. To evaluate such phenomena, a study was carried out with anti-inflammatory drugs 2-arylpropionic acids as model compounds. The results show that these chiral ILs did not present direct enantioselectivity with regard to these model analytes. The influence of chiral ILs in the electrolytes was then studied in the presence of classical chiral selectors (di- or trimethyl-beta-cyclodextrin). Although no general trend could be established, an increase in separation selectivity and resolution was observed in some cases, suggesting synergistic effects. The complementary determination of apparent inclusion constant values of these IL cations in the used cyclodextrins by affinity CE provided support to the understanding of the phenomena involved.

Enantiodifferentiation of N-benzyloxycarbonylaminophosphonic and phosphinic acids and their esters using cyclodextrins by means of capillary electrophoresis.

Capillary electrophoresis was successfully applied for separation of the enantiomers of N-benzyloxycarbonyl-alpha-aminophosphonic and alpha-aminophosphinic acids as well as their ethyl and phenyl monoesters with the use of a range of commercially available cyclodextrins (alpha, beta and hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrins) as chiral selectors. The dependence of effectiveness of separation on type and concentration of these chiral selectors as well as on pH of background electrolyte was examined in some detail.
