Using standardized terminology for nursing documentation.

Abstract

The documentation of nursing data is one important part of compiling information about patient care. Information recorded by using standardized and coded terms is needed to facilitate the subsequent use of nursing data. Structured data can be used to describe, compare and support nursing practice, research, education and management. The possibility of narrative text must also be included in documentation. The Finnish Classification of Nursing Interventions (FiCNI)Ensio A. & Saranto K.: The Finnish Classification of Nursing Interventions (FiCNI) based firmly on the Home Health Care Classification has been tested and used since 2003 in one Central Hospital and two Health Care Centers.

Enantiomeric monoterpene emissions from natural and damaged Scots pine in a boreal coniferous forest measured using solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

In order to develop a valuable method for accurate screening of biogenic emissions from undisturbed living plants or for plant-insect interactions, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been combined with dynamic branch enclosure cuvettes and enantioselective GC/MS. The study was conducted at Hyytiälä forest station, Finland within a boreal coniferous forest dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). The SPME method was optimized for monoterpenes by testing three fibre coatings: polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB) and carbowax/divinylbenzene (CW/DVB) and determining the optimum exposure time. The PDMS/DVB fibre was found to be most suitable and was used to characterize emissions of P. sylvestris enclosed in dynamic branch enclosure cuvettes by exposure for 1 min followed by desorption and separation on a beta-cyclodextrin column installed in the GC/MS oven. Dynamic cuvette measurements have been compared to static headspace SPME samples of the emission of detached needles from the same tree species and a portable dynamic air sampler (PDAS)-SPME for sampling the ambient air around the same trees. The method developed has allowed an accurate characterization of the gaseous emission of P. sylvestris and the identification of 17 isoprenoids comprising chiral and achiral monoterpenes. Two chemotypes of Scots pine can be differentiated through their emission of (+)-delta-3-carene. While SPME-dynamic cuvette, portable dynamic sampler and absorbent results agreed well, significant differences in enantiomeric ratios were observed in natural emissions and those of damaged leaves. Therefore, in enantioselective studies of plant-insect and/or plant-plant interactions, the two enantiomers of a given monoterpene should be treated as two separate substances.

Work activity analysis of Finnish occupational health professionals.

BACKGROUND: Some Finnish studies have dealt with how occupational health nurses divide their working hours but other occupational health professionals have not been evaluated. AIMS: This study describes how occupational health professionals allocate their working hours between main tasks. METHODS: Questionnaires were sent to 250 occupational health professionals, of whom 176 (70%) returned the completed forms. The data were analysed by using frequencies, means and one-way analysis of variance test. RESULTS: Employee-oriented tasks accounted for roughly 50% of working hours from all occupational health professionals. The remaining working hours were shared between workplace visits, co-operation with partners, other occupational health care responsibilities and tasks in other health care fields, especially in the health care centres. These working hours varied greatly between the different occupational health professional groups. All units employed full-time occupational health nurses, but the services of physicians, physiotherapists and psychologists were usually provided part-time or even restricted to a few hours each week because these services were difficult to obtain. Occupational health nurses working in the municipal health care centres spent more time on workplace visits than other nurses. Employee-oriented tasks were emphasized more in physicians', physiotherapists' and psychologists' work, especially in private medical health care units and in the jointly owned health care units. CONCLUSIONS: The amount of time occupational health professionals are able to spend on workplace activities appears to be determined by the type of their employer.

A case study of waste management at the Northern Finnish pulp and paper mill complex of Stora Enso Veitsiluoto Mills.

This work presents the current waste management system at the pulp and paper mill complex of Stora Enso Oyj Veitsiluoto Mills at Kemi, Northern Finland. This paper covers examples of case studies carried out at the mill and describes how the wastes and by-products are utilized as a neutralizing agent for acidic wastewaters (i.e., green liquor dregs from the causticizing process), as a hardener in filling mine cavities (i.e., ash from the fluidized bed boiler), as a landscaping agent (i.e., ash as well as the fibre clay from chemical wastewater treatment plant), as a hydraulic barrier material for landfills (i.e., fibre clay), and as a soil enrichment agent (i.e., calcium carbonate from the precipitated calcium carbonate plant). In addition, the wood waste from the wood-handling plant, sawmill, packaging pallet plant and from the groundwood mill, as well as the biosludge from the biological wastewater treatment plant, are all incinerated in the fluidized bed boiler for energy production. Due to effective utilization of the solid wastes generated at the mills, the annual amount of waste to be disposed of in the landfill has decreased between 1994 and 2004 from 42,990 to 6083 tonn (expressed as wet weight). The paper also gives an overview of the relevant European Union legislation on the forest industry and on waste management, as well as of the pulping process and of the generation of major solid wastes in the pulp and paper mills.
