[A nutrient medium for isolating Lactobacilli].

Abstract

The composition of and method for preparation of nutrient medium for the isolation of Lactobacilli from biologic material are described. The medium is simple to prepare, consists of only Soviet reagents, this making it available for laboratories in this country.

Description of conidia from submerged cultivation of Thermomyces lanuginosus for use as a uniform inoculum.

Conidia produced by submerged cultivation of the thermophilic fungus Thermomyces lanuginosus were superior to conidia from agar plates when used as inoculum, due to a faster and more synchronous germination. With conidia derived from submerged liquid culture at 40-45 degrees C more than 90% germination was achieved at 50 degrees C within 3 h whereas the same percentage germination was only achieved after 5 h incubation of conidia produced on agar plates. The temperature during conidial formation, and conidial age at the time of harvesting, were factors influencing germination of the conidia.

Correlation between local cell membrane displacements and filterability of human red blood cells.

Local mechanical fluctuations of the cell membrane of human erythrocytes were shown to involve MgATP- and Mg(2+)-driven fast membrane displacements. We propose that these local bending deformations of the cell membrane are important for cell passage through capillaries. In order to verify this hypothesis, we examined cell membrane fluctuations and filterability of erythrocytes over a wide range of medium osmolalities (180-675 mosmol/kg H2O). The results indicate the existence of a positive correlation between the amplitude of local cell membrane displacements and cell filterability. We suggest that the occurrence of metabolically driven membrane displacements on the side surface of the red blood cell diminishes its bending stiffness and enables it to fold more efficiently upon entrance into blood capillaries. Thus, local cell membrane displacements seem to play an important role in microcirculation.
