[Hearing function in children with speech retardation].

Abstract

Hearing function was studied in 140 children aged between 2 and 5 years with speech retardation and perinatal pathology for formulation of further treatment policy and rehabilitation. Impedance audiometry, SEAAE, game audiometry identified hearing loss of the first, second, third, forth degree in 6 (4%), 10 (7%), 24 (17%), 31 (21%) children respectively. Deafness was registered in 17 (12%) children, 52 (37%) examinees were audiologically normal.

Schwannoma of the external auditory canal: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Schwannomas are uncommon benign tumors of the external auditory canal. The clinical features, the differential diagnosis, and the surgical treatment of these lesions are discussed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old patient presented with a mass obliterating the external auditory meatus. Excisional biopsy was performed. Diagnosis was reported to be schwannoma by histopathologic examination. CONCLUSION: Schwannoma, rarely seen in the external auditory canal, can be managed by a precise excision of the tumor via transmeatal approach.

Hearing loss and the limits of amplification.

This review article summarizes the effects of sensorineural hearing loss on the recognition of amplified speech, both for speech presented in quiet and in a noise background. Some hypotheses are presented regarding the underlying damage in the cochlea that leads to the deficits in speech recognition for hearing losses of various configurations. For severe hearing losses in the high frequencies, amplification is often ineffective. While the existing data also suggest that sensorineural hearing loss can lead to poor frequency resolution, which leads to problems understanding speech in noise, the frequency resolution of the cochlear implant is usually even poorer. Therefore a strategy of preserving low-frequency residual hearing combined with electrical stimulation for the higher frequencies is an attractive solution for patients with severe high-frequency hearing loss.

Profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss in nigerian children: any shift in etiology?

Deafness, profound hearing loss, is a global problem. However, the causes of, attitudes toward, and management options for deafness differ considerably from region to region. This study seeks to identify the present causes of profound sensorineural hearing loss in Nigeria, which in our environment is almost synonymous to a life sentence of silence and isolation. This is a retrospective survey of children 15 years and below (M = 6.7 years, SD = 3.2). Of the 115 children included in this study, 64 (55.7%) were males, giving a male:female ratio of 5:4. Age group 1-3 years had the highest proportion of hearing loss, 33 (28.7%), and there was a progressive decline in frequency with advancing age. In about a third (34.8%) of patients, causes were unknown, probably congenital. The main acquired causes were febrile illness (18.3%), measles (13.9%), meningitis (8.7%), mumps (6.9%), or severe birth asphyxia (4.3%). Compared to the findings of two decades ago, we conclude that there is no significant shift yet in the etiology of profound sensorineural hearing loss in our environment.
