[Retentive effects between acrylic buildups and titanium root posts with and without silane coating].

Abstract

Coating titanium root posts with silane increases the adhesive bond to an acrylic buildup material by a mean 50%. Adding an opaquer enhances this bond by another approx. 15%. The best results are observed with post-retained Adaptic buildups when the posts are coated both with silane and an opaquer.

Dendritic copolymers and particulate filler composites for dental applications: degree of conversion and thermal properties.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the degree of double bond conversion and thermal properties of photopolymerized dendritic copolymers and particulate filler composites that may be used as dental restorative materials. METHODS: The resins consisted of a multifunctional dendritic monomer, methyl methacrylate and varying proportions of acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate. In addition, one of the composites contained 1,4-butanediol dimethacrylate. Camphorquinone and 2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate were used as the light-activated initiation system. The degree of conversion was determined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the thermal properties with differential scanning calorimetry. RESULTS: The degree of conversion of copolymers varied from 52 to 60% and increased with increasing concentration of acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate. The values for the composites were 32-44%. Reaction exotherms of 0.2-9.6J/g were measured for the photopolymerized experimental materials indicating residual reactivity that increased with increasing concentration of acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate. The residual reactivity trend seemed counter intuitive to the degree of conversion. The glass transition temperatures for the completely polymerized copolymers containing acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate were 112-116 degrees C and for the particulate filler composites 84-87 degrees C. SIGNIFICANCE: The addition of acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate increased the degree of conversion. The polymerization characteristics of the experimental materials were comparable to those of control materials.

Characterization of photopolymerization of dentin adhesives as a function of light source and irradiance.

Manufacturers have attempted to address the limitations associated with dentin bonding by eliminating as many steps as possible in the bonding protocol. Theoretically, this approach increases the efficiency of the procedure and reduces technique sensitivity. These trends are reflected in the introduction of all-in one, single-step adhesive systems; the increased concentration of acidic resin monomers in these systems allows for simultaneous etching and priming of the prepared dentin surface. Ideally, the degree of monomer conversion would be high enough that the acidic reaction would be self-limiting. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of light irradiance and source on the photopolymerization of three commercial dental adhesives by monitoring the double bond conversion as a function of time during and after irradiation. The photopolymerization curing efficiency of the commercial adhesives investigated in this study varied as a function of light source and distance. The use of LED performed better than the halogen light in terms of polymerization rate and degree of conversion for the commercial single-step, sixth generation adhesive, Adper Prompt. In contrast, polymerization of commercial single-bottle, fifth generation adhesive, Single Bond and One-Up Bond F, was mainly a function of exposure time, irrespective of the two light units or intensities.

Electric device improves bonds of simplified etch-and-rinse adhesives.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effects of an electric field produced by a new device for the application of etch-and-rinse adhesives on demineralized dentin surfaces. METHODS: Three simplified etch-and-rinse adhesives (Single Bond, Prime&Bond NT and One-Step) were applied with the electric device and compared with controls prepared with disposable sponges. Specimens were processed for microtensile bond strength test and nanoleakage investigation using high resolution SEM. RESULTS: Microtensile testing revealed higher bond strengths (p<0.05) for all adhesives tested when electricity was used. Adhesive interfaces prepared with electric impulses exhibited very homogenous hybrid layers with minimal nanoleakage compared with the controls. SIGNIFICANCE: The use of electricity produced by a new electronic device during the application of dentin adhesives may increase adhesive adaptation to the dentin substrate and improve dentin hybridization due to the substrate modifications induced by an electric field on the demineralized dentin organic matrix.
