Spatial localization across channels.

Abstract

We have studied vernier acuity for patterns in which the stimuli to be aligned either are similar in their spatial and color characteristics or differ in these properties. The question which we address is whether spatial localization is independent of the channels being stimulated by the patterns to be aligned. We found that the precision of vernier alignment of Gabor patches was very similar irrespective of whether the patches were the same or different in spatial frequency, orientation, or color. It appears that the visual system extracts very precise location information independent of the similarity or dissimilarity of the spatio-chromatic selectivity of the channels carrying that information.

Depth, motion, and static-flow perception at metaisoluminant color contrast.

Many experiments concerned with the role of color in depth and motion perception have applied isoluminant random-dot stereograms and cinematograms. The poor performance in the absence of luminance contrast has been associated with color-blindness of stereopsis and motion perception (Livingstone, M.S. & Hubel, D.H. (1987) J. Neurosci. 7, 3416-3468). Nevertheless, isoluminant stimuli are not fully accepted as appropriate tools in isolating central mechanisms (Logothetis, N.K., Schiller, P.H., Charles, E.R. & Hurlbert, A.C. (1990) Science 247, 214-217). In our experiments we use a broad luminance range to test whether color can contribute to a given mechanism when luminance contrast is present but has a strong "veto" effect from opposite luminance contrast, a condition we named "metaisoluminance." There is no fusion in stereopsis under polarity reversal, when only luminance information is given, and reversed-phi phenomenon is experienced for motion. As a third "matching" task, we included polarity-reversed random-dot Glass-patterns, which exhibit "static flow" and also show pattern reversal. We found that color can counteract the effects of polarity reversal by restoring stereoscopic fusion and reversed phi motion and does it with increased efficiency as the hue contrast increases. We found no such effect of color in Glass-patterns. Thus, we showed that the visual system for binocular depth and motion perception is not color-blind, although correlated hue information under metaisoluminance does not appear to yield shape perception.

Absorption spectra of the hybrid pigments responsible for anomalous color vision.

Unequal homologous recombination events between green and red cone pigment genes produce the red-green or green-red hybrid pigment genes found in many individuals with variant color vision. Photobleaching difference absorption spectroscopy of hybrid pigments produced in cultured cells shows that the spectral sensitivity of each hybrid pigment is intermediate between the parental green and red pigment sensitivities. Amino acids encoded by exons 2, 3, 4, and 5 produce spectral shifts at the wavelength of maximal absorbance of 0 to 4, 0 to 4, 3 to 4, and 15 to 21 nanometers, respectively, the exact value depending on the identities of amino acids elsewhere in the hybrid.

Dichromats detect colour-camouflaged objects that are not detected by trichromats.

To explain the surprisingly high frequency of congenital red-green colour blindness, the suggestion has been made that dichromats might be at an advantage in breaking certain kinds of colour camouflage. We have compared the performance of dichromats and normal observers in a task in which texture is camouflaged by colour. The texture elements in a target area differed in either orientation or size from the background elements. In one condition, the texture elements were all of the same colour; in the camouflage condition they were randomly coloured red or green. For trichromats, it proved to be more difficult to detect the target region in the camouflage condition, even though colour was completely irrelevant to the task. Dichromats (n = 7) did not show this effect, and indeed performed better than trichromats in the camouflage condition. We conclude that colour can interfere with segregation based upon texture, and that dichromats are less susceptible to such interference.
