Comparative efficiency testing 330 carbide dental burs utilizing Macor substrate.

Abstract

Traditionally, it has been difficult to compare the clinical performance of carbide dental burs. The purpose of this laboratory study was to investigate the comparative cutting efficiency of number 330 dental burs from six manufacturers. These burs were tested utilizing custom-built equipment consisting of a frictionless air sled to which the Macor substrate was attached. The substrate was fed to the bur at constant pressure. The efficiency of each bur, defined as the distance of the cut divided by the time taken, then was calculated. Of the six bur types tested, only one was found to be markedly superior, and four types were comparable in performance.

Verifiable CPD paper: introduction, history of lasers and laser light production.

The word laser conjures in the mind's eye many aspects of what might be described as 'modern' life. The words 'powerful', 'precise' and 'innovative' complement our conception of the world in terms of technology, whereas patients often associate the words 'magical' and 'lightening quick' with the use of lasers in medical practice. The purpose of this series of articles is to explore the history and development of lasers, the integration of lasers into clinical dentistry and the safeguards as to their regulated use.

Use of CVDentUS diamond tips for ultrasound in cavity preparation.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of CVDentUS tips for preparing cavities with ultrasound by dentists certified to use the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) system. METHODS AND MATERIALS: One thousand sixty (1060) questionnaires were sent via e-mail inquiring about the use of the system with regard to the indication for use, need for anesthesia, final form of cavity preparation, and tip wear. RESULTS: Of the valid answers, 81.4% of the dentists used this system for tooth preparation in up to 60% of cases treated. For these procedures, 17.8% did not require use of local anesthesia while using the system. The final form of preparation compared to high speed diamond tips was considered to be more conservative by 48.3% of the certified professionals. With regard to wear, tip and/or adapter fractures, and low cutting speed, 44.4% of users reported problems. DISCUSSION: The CVD system seems to be used for tooth cavity preparation by the majority of the certified dentists. This is due to the resultant conservation of tooth structure despite the necessity of anesthesia and the limitations with regard to the lack of cutting efficiency of CVDentUS and tip wear. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The CVD system seems to present limitations with regard to cutting efficiency, wear, and the use of anesthesia in a majority of restorative procedures.

Microleakage of class V glass ionomer restorations after conventional and Er:YAG laser preparation.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the microleakage in class V cavities following Er:YAG laser or conventional preparation restored with two conventional glass ionomer cements (cGIC) and to evaluate the effect of conditioning on laser-prepared surfaces. BACKGROUND DATA: Information on this topic related to cGIC is scarce. METHODS: Sixty class V cavities were assigned to six groups: I and IV were Er:YAG-lased, II and V Er:YAG-lased and conditioned, and III and VI conventionally prepared and conditioned. Groups I, II, and III, were restored with Ketac Fil Plus Applicap; groups IV, V, and VI were restored with Fuji IX GP Capsule. Then, teeth were stored in distilled water (37 degrees C, 24 h), thermal cycled 1500 times (5-55 degrees C), placed in a 2% aqueous solution of methylene blue (37 degrees C, 24 h), embedded in acrylic resin, sectioned oro-facially, and analyzed for leakage. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences between occlusal and cervical regions were observed (p < 0.05). Group III showed significantly more microleakage at the occlusal margin compared to group II (p = 0.022). Group V showed significantly more microleakage at the gingival margin than group VI (p = 0.022). Leakage on the occlusal margins was significantly higher in group III than in group VI (p = 0.038). Scanning electron microscopy indicated that conditioning of laser-prepared dentin with Ketac conditioner partially closed the tubules' orifices, whereas the use of GC conditioner completely obliterated the tubules. CONCLUSION: The application of Ketac Fil Plus to laser-prepared enamel and dentin resulted in a better and more reproducible seal compared to conventionally prepared tooth surfaces. When using the more viscous Fuji IX application, Er:YAG lasing did not improve marginal adaptation.
