Abstract

The transmissibility of HIV infection through blood transfusion has resulted in many altered ideas about blood transfusion and a re-evaluation of the indications for transfusion. Because of the risks of transfusion, the increased emphasis on proper use of hospital resources and the increasing number of managed care patients, a continuing emphasis on the appropriate indications for transfusion can be anticipated.
