Chest drainage tubes.

Abstract

In general, appropriate use of tube thoracostomy results in complete drainage of the collected air and fluid in the pleural space and allows full expansion and occupation of the entire pleural space by the lung, thus protecting the lung and pleural space from subsequent complications. In addition, the drainage of the pleural space with a tube thoracostomy allows more accurate monitoring of the rate of accumulation of air and blood in the pleural space. Thus, it provides valuable information for the subsequent management of some patients, such as those with traumatic hemothorax.

[Advanced techniques in surgical treatment of penetrating gunshot wounds of the chest].

The results of treatment of 322 wounded with penetrating gun-shot wounds of the chest during local hostility from 1994 till 1996 are analyzed. Aggravation in the condition of the hospitalized wounded was observed due to reduction of time of evacuation in hospitals. The indications for surgery were in 96.3% wounded. The main surgical methods were thoracocentesis and drainage of pleural cavity performed in 80.1% wounded. Thoracotomy was performed in 9.6% wounded. High efficiency of operative videothoracoscopy performed in 4.4% wounded in hospital of the first aid is demonstrated, it allowed to reduce frequency of thoracotomy to 2.4%.

Hemothorax↗

Pulmonary vein injury through repetitive clip friction: an unusual cause of hemothorax.

Massive hemothorax developed in a 58-year-old man 12 hours after a left pneumonectomy. The source of bleeding was a tear in the pulmonary vein stump caused by a titanium clip that had been used during mediastinal lymphadenectomy. Postoperatively, the clip progressively sawed through the vascular wall of the pulmonary vein due to friction during the cardiac cycle.
