Complete denture esthetics.

Abstract

Complete denture esthetics can no longer be considered solely a function of tooth selection and arrangement or the colors and contours of the denture bases. Denture esthetics must also include the entire face in which the expressions of inner feelings, personality, comfort, image, well-being, and perceptions of past dental experiences are all very evident. These hard and soft components all contribute to the complete denture esthetic result; they are inseparable and should be given every consideration when developing a successful complete denture esthetic restoration. Both the patient and the dentist must understand this interrelationship for optimal success.

The hollow box maxillary obturator.

A case is reported assessing the problems encountered after surgical resection of the maxilla. The use of a hollow box obturator and details of its construction are described. The importance of skin grafting of the maxillary defect and use of available anatomical undercuts to optimise support and retention of the obturator is stressed. By provision of a lightweight hollow obturator, the weight of the prosthesis is kept to a minimum, helping retention, and allowing good resonance during speech. Initially the patient was to be assessed for an implant retained prosthesis, however, a satisfactory conventional prosthesis met the functional and aesthetic needs of the patient and avoided the need for further surgery for placement of implants.

Nontraumatic immediate complete denture placement: a clinical report.

This clinical report presents a treatment procedure that makes immediate denture placement a more predictable and less stressful procedure. It provides greater control over the prosthodontic aspects of denture delivery by the restorative dentist, and the convenience of performing the placement procedures in a clean, blood-free environment. The delivery of the prosthesis is less traumatic because extractions and/or surgery are deferred. In addition, by the time the remaining roots are extracted, all denture adjustments will have been made and the patient will have accommodated to the prosthesis.

An esthetic and hygienic approach to the use of intracoronal attachments as interlocks in fixed prosthodontics.

This article describes a procedure that uses the Ney MS (Minimal Space) intracoronal attachment as an interlock in a pontic. This procedure overcomes the disadvantages associated with the use of the intracoronal attachments, which are (1) excessive tooth reduction often required to place the attachment within the contour of the crown; (2) compromised embrasures, which result in oral hygiene and periodontal problems; and (3) poor esthetics.
