Screening for HIV. U.S. Preventive Services task Force.

Abstract

RECOMMENDATION: Screening for infection with human immunodeficiency virus should be offered periodically to persons seeking treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, intravenous drug users, homosexual and bisexual men, and other at increased risk of infection. Testing should also be offered to pregnant women (or women contemplating pregnancy) who are at increased risk for HIV infection. Testing should not be performed in the absence of informed consent and adequate pretest and post-test counseling. Clinicians should be careful to use proper tests and qualified laboratories. Seropositive persons require adequate post-test counseling, and drug and sexual partners should be properly notified. Persons with negative test results also require counseling and repeat testing when appropriate.
