Semisolid ophthalmic vehicles.

Abstract

The present review is concerned with some essential formulative and therapeutic aspects of semisolid ophthalmic vehicles. The history and the most recent developments of the traditional lipophilic vehicles (ointments) are first outlined. The hydrophilic vehicles (hydrogels) based on synthetic polymers (polyacrylates, PEG, PVA, Pluronics, etc.), semisynthetic polymers (cellulose derivatives) and natural polymers (hyaluronic and polygalacturonic acid, alginates, etc.) are then examined. Some recent formulations of particular type are finally described.

[Extraction-spectrophotometric determination of carbethopendecinium-bromide in drug preparations].

The paper elaborated the conditions for the determination of carbethopendecinium bromide with bromthymol blue and methyl orange (concentration of the drug and the colouring agent, pH of the aqueous phase, period of extraction with chloroform). Within a carbethopendecinium bromide concentration range of 1.10(-5) to 6.10(-5) mol/l, the linear dependence of absorbance of the ion-associate with the colouring agent on concentration was confirmed. At pH 3 and pH 10, the above-described procedure was used to determine the content of carbethopendecinium bromide in medicinal preparations (eye and nasal drops) using the calibration curve and comparison with one standard. The results were reproducible and the found deviations from the declared content ranged within a tolerance of +/- 10%.

[Polymer-containing eye drops. I. Rheological characteristics of polymer solutions].

Authors studied rheological features of opthalmic solutions. They found that water soluble polymer solutions of different characteristics (non-ionic, anionic, linear chain, and/or cross linked) are pseudoplastic in rheological aspect. Rheological features exponentially increase with the concentration of the polymer. With the calculation of the constants of the exponential line, polymer concentration providing an optimum viscosity can be determined.
