[Suction technic and suction method in dental practice].

Abstract

By way of introduction the authors deal with the necessity for suction as an important component of ergonomic work organization in dental practice. The technical pre-conditions (suction technique) are indicated. Principles are formulated for their beneficial application in the sense of systematic suction methodics.

Efficacy of a new brush-covered irrigation needle in removing root canal debris: a scanning electron microscopic study.

The usefulness of NaviTip FX, a brush-covered irrigation needle, in endodontic therapy has never been reported. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the cleaning efficacy of this new brush-covered irrigation needle, the NaviTip FX. Thirty single-rooted teeth were randomly divided into two equal groups and instrumented using the crown-down technique with 0.04 taper ProFile. Following each file use, the canals were irrigated with 1 ml of 5.25% NaOCl using the NaviTip FX needle for group 1 or using the same needle without the brush for group 2. At the end of instrumentation, the roots were cut longitudinally and each half was divided into three equal parts. The specimens were then routinely prepared for scanning electron microscopic evaluation. The results showed that using the NaviTip FX produced cleaner coronal thirds of instrumented root canals compared to the control group. On the other hand, the middle and apical thirds were not statistically significantly different between the two groups. Further development of this irrigation technique to improve cleanliness of the apical and middle thirds is required before the NaviTip FX can be recommended for routine use during root canal therapy.

The influence of the surgical operating microscope in locating the mesiolingual canal orifice: a laboratory analysis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of using the surgical operating microscope (SOM) for detection of the mesiolingual (ML) canal orifice in extracted first maxillary permanent molars. One hundred and eight human first maxillary permanent molars were randomly selected and mounted onto a dental chair mannequin. Conventional access cavity was prepared and an attempt was made to locate the mesiolingual canal orifice using only a sharp explorer, a mirror and a #10 K-file. A mesiolingual canal orifice was either located or not located. If not located, the teeth were then evaluated by using a surgical operating microscope (SOM). The mesiobuccal roots of all teeth where the ML canal orifice had not been located were sectioned in an axial plane and the sections were explored with an adjunctive use of the SOM at a 25 X magnification. ML canal orifices were detected in 58 teeth using only a sharp explorer, a mirror and #10 K-file. In the remaining 50 teeth, 37 ML canal orifices were located by using the SOM and 3 ML canal orifices were located after root sectioning. In 10 teeth, the ML canal orifices were not found. The results of this study showed a high incidence of a ML canal in the mesiobuccal roots of the first maxillary molars (90.7%) and demonstrated that the adjunctive use of the SOM increased the ability of the dental clinician to locate the ML canal orifice.

Development of a new micro-endoscope for odontological application.

PURPOSE: Development and introduction of a new micro-endoscope called Visio Scope for multidiscipline use in dentistry. METHODS: During the development of the new micro-endoscope called Visio Scope testings in the following dental disciplines were performed: endodontics, periodontology, implantology, periapical surgery, prosthodontics, and laser treatment. In this first report, flexible micro-endoscopes with an external diameter of 1.0 mm as well as of 0.34 mm were used. RESULTS: There is a significant improvement in all tested disciplines concerning handling and flexibility, verification of radiologically not detectable findings. In this context, the endoscope has proved itself clearly superior to conventional optical aids, above all the surgical microscope. The working canal facilitates specific application of medication and irrigation solutions. CONCLUSIONS: The Visio Scope allows visual control of the extent of the bone defect and enables optical control after removal of concrements and granulation tissue, before possible regenerative measures. Root fractures and furcation invasion can be reliably documented. Optical control guarantees preoperative and postoperative success of treatment.
