[Biochemical changes in a decrease in the voluntary consumption of alcohol by rats due to lithium chloride].

Abstract

A decrease of alcohol intake by ethanol-preferring rats under free choice conditions after intraperitoneal administration of lithium chloride (35 mg/kg) was accompanied by an activation of aldehyde dehydrogenase in the brain stem, a decrease of dopamine and salsolinol levels in the striatum and normalization of 11-hydroxycorticosteroids contents in the blood and adrenal glands.

[Age-related changes in the reaction of the adrenal cortex to surgical stress in cancer patients].

11-Oxycorticosteroids levels were determined in 371 patients with breast, stomach and rectal cancer in the process of surgical treatment. More pronounced reaction of the adrenal cortex to surgical stress and/or time-delayed restoration of the hormone level within the next few days were found in older patients. Resistance to inhibition by dexamethasone in stomach cancer patients was accompanied by elevated cortisol levels during operation. It is concluded that age-related decrease in hypothalamo-pituitary complex sensitivity to inhibition by corticosteroids may be a cause of hypercortisolemia in the course of surgery.

[The gamma-aminobutyric acid content of the blood plasma in patients with Itsenko-Cushing disease and its dependence on clinical and hormonal indices].

The content of GABA was measured in blood plasma of 111 patients suffering from Itsenko-Cushing disease. In untreated females, the blood GABA content was noticeably lowered; during treatment it increased, reaching normal, on the average, in patients with a history of total adrenalectomy. The changes in the blood GABA content in male patients were marked to a less degree. In the persons with a history of total adrenalectomy the GABA content turned out higher than normal. The blood GABA content in patients was dependent on the age and disease standing. In males experiencing disease exacerbation, it was appreciably reduced. As compared to females, the degree of a negative correlation between the blood content of GABA and ACTH (or cortisol) in males was more pronounced. The correlation between the excretion of 17-HCS with urine and GABA blood content in men and women was reverse. Women manifested a positive correlation between the excretion of 17-HCS with urine and blood GABA content, whereas men between arterial pressure and blood GABA. The problem of potential disorders of the GABAergic brain system in patients afflicted with Itsenko-Cushing disease is under discussion.

[Development of arterial pressure rhythm and cardiac contraction rate and effects of beta-adrenomimetic agents].

Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) rhythms were studied in premature infants (299 profiles ranged 24-106 h at 20--min intervals) and 11-13-year-old children (19 profiles for 48 h at 15-min intervals) to explore ultradian-to-circannual rhythm characteristics in BP and HR in preterm human infant and to elucidate the influence of antenatal betamimetic (BM) exposure on adolescent BP and HR rhythms. A circannual modulation of the 3-h amplitude (A) or MESOR of systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) was seen mainly in prematures with a positive family history of high BP on the father's (f+) side or with both a patro linous and matro-linous history (f+m+), the circannual modulation of HR ultradian A was statistically significant only in "f- m-" infants. In urine collected at 3 h intervals for 24-h spans from 21 premature infants Na+,K+ and 11-oxycorticosteroids had a significant circadian rhythm. 9 adolescents (BM+), which were exposed in utero to different BM doses, had a significantly higher SBP and DBP MESOR and numerically higher circadian A as compared to 10 controls (BM-); correlation (P less than 0.05) between BM dose and HR circadian A was found. DBP led SBP in 8 or 10 "BM-" but in 4 of 9 "BM+" (acrophase difference 17 min and 3 min correspondingly).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
