Pseudofolliculitis barbae.

Abstract

Pseudofolliculitis barbae is a chronic, distressing and potentially disfiguring dermatologic disorder that occurs predominantly in black men. The condition is caused by hairs curling back into the skin and is characterized by papules, pustules and, occasionally, keloidal scars over the beard region. Management includes cessation of shaving, the use of depilatories or topical antibiotics and modification of shaving techniques.

Centrifugal lipodystrophy of the face mimicking progressive lipodystrophy.

We report a Japanese boy with centrifugal lipodystrophy. The initial lesion developed on the forehead as an area of erythema which showed centrifugal spread and central fading to leave a residual depression. Three years later, similar erythematous lesions appeared on the cheeks, and he developed a cadaverous appearance. A central depression on the upper trunk was surrounded by an erythematous border and there was right cervical lymphadenopathy. Histological examination revealed inflammatory changes in the subcutaneous fat. Although this patient showed the characteristics of both centrifugal and progressive lipodystrophy (partial lipodystrophy), we consider that he has centrifugal lipodystrophy of the face because of the overall features of the lesions.

Diagnosis and management of orofacial herpes simplex virus infections.

HSV disease remains a significant problem for the dental profession because of its widespread occurrence and ready transmission. Fortunately, available diagnostic techniques are highly sensitive and specific, antiviral therapy is effective in limiting the course of infection, and contemporary infection control procedures adequately safeguard dental personnel and the patient. Unfortunately, there is still a large segment of the population already infected with HSV-1 and the number of immunosuppressed latently infected patients continues to increase. Thus, patients will continue to need the help of the knowledgeable and willing dentist who can diagnose HSV-1 infection, provide effective treatment, and prevent transmission.
