The lateral conchal resection otoplasty.

Abstract

A procedure for surgical correction of protruding ears has been utilized in 118 cases. The technique incorporates steps to correct the most common deformities found on preoperative evaluation. The lateral conchal resection com bined with mattress sutures is not complex and thus readily learned by residents. It has yielded consistently excellent cosmetic results combined with an exceedingly low complication rate. The procedure is adaptable to well over 90 percent of patients seeking an otoplasty procedure.

Multisectional mold for fabrication of prosthetic ears.

The use of a multisectional stone mold is advocated for the fabrication of prosthetic ears. Less force is required in the deflasking procedure with this technique, reducing the risk of fracturing the mold or tearing the prosthesis. This technique requires more time and care in the flasking procedure. Convergence of the sections is of particular importance. The potential for multiple section lines may result in a need for more surface finishing of the prosthesis.

Traumatic injuries in the parotid region.

The facial nerve, parotid duct, and external ear canal are at risk from penetrating injuries in the parotid region. The areas of the face supplied by the major branches of the facial nerve should be checked in the emergency department so that repair of a cut nerve can be performed while the distal end is able to be stimulated electronically. The parotid duct can be probed and lacerations repaired. The external ear canal should be repaired and stented to prevent stenosis.
