Optical errors in a liquid chromatography absorbance cell.

Abstract

The shadowgraph method is used to visualize mobile phase flow through a liquid chromatography absorbance cell with "Z" flow geometry. It is shown that mixing is incomplete in the cell. Composition gradients persist throughout the elution of any sample. The gradients systematically change as the sample flows through the cell. Additionally, window wedge angles are measured in several cells. The implications for low noise absorbance detectors are discussed.

Isocratic non-aqueous reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic separation of capsanthin and capsorubin in red peppers (Capsicum annuum L.), paprika and oleoresin.

A simple, rapid high-performance liquid chromatography method has been devised in order to separate and quantify the xanthophylls capsorubin and capasanthin present in red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) fruits and preparations made from them (paprika and oleoresin). A reversed-phase isocratic non-aqueous system allows the separation of xanthophylls within a few minutes, with detection at 450 nm, using methyl red as internal standard to locate the various carotenoids and xanthophylls found in plant extracts. The selection of extraction solvents, mild saponification conditions, and chromatographic features is evaluated and discussed. The method is proposed for rapid screening of large plant populations, plant selection, as well as for paprika products and oleoresin, and also for nutrition and quality control studies.

Studies on pyroelectric response of polymers modified with azobenzene moieties.

In this review we present investigations on new materials and arrangements for new pyroelectric sensor devices. We applied pyroelectrical measurements on thin films based upon poly(vinyl alcohol)s and poly(siloxane)s with azobenzene side chains and discuss the relaxation behaviour and stability of poled pyroelectric polymers. Results on special poly(vinyl alcohol)s with side chains consisting of azobenzene unit and aliphatic head group are comparable with those achieved by poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). The new radiation-sensitive material seemed to be suitable as a detector system for the in situ determination of glucose in blood. Further developments of a complex detector system are now under investigation.

Simultaneous determination of the colorants sunset yellow FCF and quinoline yellow by solid-phase spectrophotometry using partial least squares multivariate calibration.

A method for the simultaneous determination of the colorants Sunset Yellow FCF and Quinoline Yellow using solid-phase spectrophotometry is proposed. The colorants were isolated in Sephadex DEAE A-25 gel at pH 5.0, the gel-colorants system was packed in a 1 mm silica cell and spectra were recorded between 400 and 600 nm against a blank. Statistical results were obtained by partial least squares (PLS) multivariate calibration. The optimized matrix by using the PLS-2 method enables the determination of the colorants in artificial mixtures and commercial soft drinks.
